Chapter 10 - The False Victory

Luke casually swirled a glass of expensive bourbon, looking completely relaxed in the dim cabin light.
He didn't look at all like a man whose empire was crumbling or whose wife was trying to actively destroy him.
He simply smiled, a terrifying, incredibly hollow expression that made my blood run instantly cold.
I slowly backed toward the open cabin door, but a massive bodyguard stepped out from the cockpit and blocked my only exit.
Luke politely gestured to the empty leather seat across from him, smoothly offering me a drink.
I firmly refused to sit, clutching the black ledger tightly against my chest like a fragile shield.
I confidently told him that Julian Rossi already had digital copies of absolutely everything inside this book.
I lied flawlessly, stating that if I didn't call Julian by dawn, the federal authorities would automatically receive the entire manifest.
Luke’s confident smile faded slightly, a rare flicker of genuine irritation crossing his perfectly handsome face.
He knew I was smart enough to build a safety net, and he couldn't possibly take the risk of calling my bluff tonight.
He slowly placed his glass on the table and pulled a solid gold pen from his tailored suit jacket.
He casually reached into his briefcase and pulled out the exact divorce papers I had left on his nightstand earlier.
He signed his name with a violent, aggressive stroke, formally ending our three-year marriage in an instant.
He slid the papers across the polished table, demanding the ledger in exchange for my life.
I confidently threw the heavy black book onto the table, aggressively grabbing the signed legal documents with trembling hands.
Luke coldly ordered his bodyguard to step aside, telling me to get out of his sight forever.
I walked rapidly down the metal stairs of the plane, my heart soaring with the overwhelming taste of absolute victory.
I had actually won against the most terrifying man in Chicago, and I was completely free.
I ran wildly toward a taxi idling near the edge of the dark tarmac, desperate to get to a commercial airport.
I slid quickly into the backseat, giving the driver urgent instructions to head straight to O'Hare International.
The driver didn't say a single word as he threw the car into drive and sped rapidly away from the airstrip.
I leaned my exhausted head against the cool glass of the window, gently resting my hand on my stomach.
We drove silently for ten minutes before I suddenly realized we were heading into the dense, unlit woods instead of the highway.
The heavy metal locks on the taxi doors suddenly slammed shut with a sharp, echoing click.
The silent driver slowly turned around, smoothly removing a dark baseball cap to reveal her face.
It was Maya, my supposedly loyal divorce attorney, holding a silenced pistol aimed directly at my chest.
She smiled warmly and whispered that Luke had indeed signed the divorce papers to let me go.
But she was the one who had actually frozen my bank accounts, and Julian Rossi had never been trying to help me.

She slowly cocked the gun and softly added that my husband wasn't the one who wanted me dead tonight.
It was the real father of my unborn baby who had paid her millions to completely finish the job.
