Chapter 1 - The Doctor's Secret

The clinical smell of bleach and sterile alcohol hit my lungs the moment I walked into the exam room.
My hands trembled slightly as I sat on the edge of the paper-lined table.
I had rehearsed this exact moment a thousand times in the dark silence of my bedroom.
I was finally going to end my pregnancy.
It was the hardest decision of my life, but staying married to a monster was no longer an option.
The heavy wooden door clicked open.
A female doctor walked in, her face partially obscured by a blue surgical mask and a plastic face shield.
She picked up my medical chart and began reading in complete silence.
The air in the room grew instantly heavy and still.
The doctor slowly lowered her mask.
My breath caught painfully in my throat.
It was Dr. Elena Morgan.
She was my husband’s younger sister.
Elena stared at me, her eyes wide with absolute, undeniable shock.
She asked if Luke knew I was pregnant.
I firmly told her that he did not.
She asked if he knew why I was sitting in this specific clinic today.
I coldly replied that he didn't need to know anything about my body.
I was almost five months along, and my time to make a safe choice was rapidly running out.
Elena carefully explained that there were complex medical and legal issues we had to discuss before I made any final decision.
Her voice trembled, shifting from a professional physician to a highly concerned family member.
I stopped her immediately.
I quietly reminded her that right now, she was solely my doctor.
I told her I needed to be treated like any other anonymous patient in this hospital.
I demanded that my personal medical information be kept strictly private.
After a long, suffocating silence, she slowly nodded her head.
I left the clinic feeling like I was walking on fragile, shattered glass.
The moment I stepped outside into the cold Chicago wind, my cell phone rang.
It was Luke.
He didn't say hello or ask how my day was going.
He didn't ask where I had been all morning or how I was feeling.
He simply ordered me to attend a formal dinner with him that night.
That was the harsh reality of being married to Luke Morgan.
Chicago knew him as a wealthy, untouchable businessman who controlled half the real estate in the city.
I just called him my terrifying husband.
I hung up the phone and looked back at the towering hospital building.
I knew Elena was bound by strict medical ethics, but she was also bound by blood to a very dangerous man.

As a black SUV with tinted windows suddenly pulled up to the curb, I realized my nightmare was just beginning.
The rear window rolled down slowly, revealing Luke’s head of security staring directly at me with dead eyes.
