Chapter 1 - The Invisible Boy

The room was packed with billionaires, senators, and tech investors holding crystal champagne glasses.
Twelve-year-old Matthew Vale stood beside a marble column as if he were completely invisible.
His father, Alexander Vale, was the most powerful tech CEO on the East Coast.
Alexander stood merely ten feet away, charming an entire circle of wealthy donors with his famous half-smile.
He laughed at the right moments and shook hands like a man who owned the entire world.
But the powerful billionaire never looked at his deaf son.
Matthew wore a custom black suit and the stiff expression of a child who knew rich people pitied him.
Guests occasionally smiled at him with awkward sympathy or spoke far too loudly.
They treated him like a broken doll instead of a boy who had survived a horrific tragedy.
Then a small girl in a simple blue dress stepped out from behind the heavy velvet curtains.
Lucy Harper was the eleven-year-old daughter of the head housekeeper.
She had been strictly warned by her mother not to bother anyone at the extravagant charity gala.
But she had been watching Matthew stand alone all night.
She watched his sad eyes follow moving mouths he could not hear.
Lucy took a deep breath, walked across the polished marble floor, and stopped directly in front of him.
She lifted her trembling hands and signed the word for hello.
Matthew froze in absolute shock.
He stared at her small hands as if they were a magical door opening in a solid brick wall.
The hard little mask on his face instantly disappeared.
His eyes brightened with a shocked, beautiful happiness that made Lucy's throat tighten.
He quickly signed back, asking if she knew American Sign Language.
Lucy blushed, awkwardly signing that she only knew a little bit.
Matthew smiled, and it was the first real smile anyone had seen from him all night.
For the first time since his mother died, the silence around him was not completely empty.
But their beautiful moment was violently shattered when a stern woman in a black dress marched over.
It was Alexander Vale's ruthless personal assistant, and she looked absolutely furious.
She grabbed Lucy by the arm and harshly demanded to know why a servant's child was harassing the VIPs.
Before Lucy could explain, a deep, terrifying voice echoed behind them.

Alexander Vale had stepped away from his donors, and his cold eyes were locked directly on Lucy.
He coldly demanded to know exactly what was going on in his house.
