Chapter 7 - The Pulse of Life

Nathan pushed past the nurse and barged directly into the surgical suite, ignoring the sterile protocol.

Dr. Harrison was performing frantic chest compressions on Maya’s motionless body.

The heart monitor screamed a single, flat, agonizing note that seemed to freeze the blood in Nathan's veins.

"Charge to two hundred!" Dr. Harrison yelled, holding the defibrillator paddles over Maya's chest.

"Clear!"

Maya's body jolted from the electric surge, but the flatline continued without a single beat.

Across the room, inside the sterile warming incubator, a pediatric nurse was bagging a tiny, pale infant.

The baby boy was not moving, and his small chest remained completely still.

Nathan felt his entire world collapsing into a black, endless void.

He dropped beside Maya's head, grabbing her cold hand and pressing it against his cheek.

"You cannot leave me, Maya," Nathan whispered, tears falling onto her pale face.

"Our son needs you, I need you... breathe, Maya, please breathe!"

"Charging to three hundred!" Dr. Harrison called out again.

"Clear!"

The second shock delivered an even larger jolt to Maya's heart.

Silence hung over the room for five suffocating seconds.

Then, a single beep broke the silence.

Another beep followed, slow and faint, but undeniably present.

"We have sinus rhythm!" the anesthesiologist shouted with immense relief.

"Blood pressure is stabilizing!"

Simultaneously, from the warming table across the room, a sharp, indignant wail pierced the air.

The baby boy took his first deep breath and began to cry loudly, kicking his tiny legs into the warm air.

Nathan collapsed against the side of the operating table, sobbing with overwhelming, pure relief.

"He's breathing on his own," the pediatric nurse smiled through her tears, wrapping the infant in a soft blue blanket.

"He is a fighter, Mr. Cross, just like his mother."

Dr. Harrison wiped the sweat from his forehead with his sleeve and looked at Nathan.

"She made it through the worst of it, Nathan; she needs rest, but she is going to live."

Nathan walked over to the incubator and gently touched his son's tiny fingers, feeling the infant's grip tighten around his finger.

Suddenly, the hospital's emergency PA system crackled to life with a screech of static.

A distorted voice echoed through every speaker in the building: "Attention hospital staff: explosive devices have been armed in the basement utility room."
