Chapter 5 - The Forced Vow

The walls of the office felt like they were closing in on me.
My entire relationship with Adrian, the charming doctor who bumped into me at a coffee shop eleven months ago, was a calculated lie.
He hadn't fallen in love with me.
He had hunted me down because he knew I was Ethan's new assistant.
I shoved the black folder into my tote bag, my hands shaking so violently I dropped my keys twice.
I had to get to the office and show this to Ethan immediately.
I ran out to the hallway, where my security detail was waiting.
"Take me to Carter Tower right now," I told the lead bodyguard.
We arrived at the corporate headquarters in record time, but the lobby was swarming with aggressive paparazzi.
"What's going on?" I asked as my guards forced a path through the screaming reporters.
"Look at the screens, Miss Bennett," one of the guards said, pointing to the massive news televisions above the reception desk.
My blood turned to ice.
Adrian was standing on the steps of the federal courthouse, giving a live press conference.
"The allegations against my hospital are a personal vendetta," Adrian announced to the cameras, looking like a tragic, misunderstood hero.
"Ethan Carter is trying to destroy me because he is obsessed with my fiancée."
The reporters shoved microphones closer, eating up the scandalous narrative.
"But love conquers all," Adrian smiled, looking directly into the news camera.
"Ava and I are moving our wedding up to this Saturday, and we invite the whole city to witness our vows."
I clamped my hand over my mouth to stop myself from screaming.

He wasn't just trapping me in a marriage.
He was using the media to make sure Ethan couldn't protect me without looking like a jealous, crazy billionaire.
