Chapter 1 - The Seven Words

The platinum cake knife hovered a mere inch above the pristine fondant. Clara smiled for the flashing cameras, leaning into Marcus’s warm embrace. It was the climax of the evening, the moment that would grace the covers of every high-society magazine from New York to Paris.

Then, the heavy oak doors of the Sovereign Palace were violently thrown open.

The heavy thud echoed like a cannon shot, instantly silencing the classical orchestra. The blinding flashbulbs abruptly stopped. Five hundred of the world's most powerful elites turned in unison toward the entrance.

Standing on the threshold was a young man in a soaked, tattered denim jacket. He was bleeding from a cut above his brow, his chest heaving as he stared down the aisle directly at the bride and groom.

Marcus’s hand tightened on Clara’s waist, his grip turning from a gentle caress into a vice of steel.

The stranger pointed a trembling, bloodstained finger directly at Clara’s chest. The silence in the room was absolute, heavy, and suffocating.

"That emerald was stolen from a corpse," he screamed.

Exactly seven words. Seven words that shattered the immaculate illusion of the Sterling dynasty.

A collective gasp ripped through the ballroom. Clara’s breath hitched. She instinctively reached up, her fingers brushing the cold, heavy emerald pendant resting against her collarbone.

"Security!" Arthur Sterling, Marcus’s father and the patriarch of the real estate empire, bellowed from the front row. His face was a mask of purple rage. "Get that lunatic out of here!"

Three massive guards in tailored suits sprinted toward the young man.

"Her name was Maya!" the stranger yelled as the guards tackled him to the polished quartz floor. "She was a journalist! Marcus killed her last night! Look at the clasp of the necklace! Look at the clasp!"

Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs. She looked up at Marcus, expecting to see confusion or outrage. Instead, she saw something that terrified her to her core: absolute, calculating panic.

"It’s a deranged stalker, Clara," Marcus hissed, forcefully grabbing her arm and pulling her away from the wedding cake. "Don't listen to him. We need to leave the room. Now."
