Chapter 2 - The Golden Boy's Panic

Outside, Sterling Croft was holding court. Dressed in a custom white Tom Ford suit, holding a crystal tumbler of Macallan 25, he looked like a modern deity.

"In thirty minutes, we change the world," Croft boasted to a circle of fawning venture capitalists. "Aura isn't just a cloud network. It is the absolute future of digital security. Un-hackable. Un-traceable. Invincible."

The crowd applauded. Croft soaked it in, his blinding smile perfectly rehearsed.

Then, his smartphone vibrated violently in his pocket. It was a specialized ringtone—the emergency line connecting directly to his Chief Technology Officer, David.

Croft excused himself, stepping away from the crowd and putting the phone to his ear. "David. We are twenty-nine minutes from the launch. Why are you calling me?"

"Sterling, we have a massive problem," David’s voice was high-pitched, laced with sheer terror. "The offshore mainframes... they're locking down."

"What do you mean, locking down? Reboot the core!"

"I can't! We’re locked out of our own system! Someone injected a highly aggressive polymorphic worm directly into the root architecture. It’s encrypting the entire IPO ledger. Sterling, if we don't stop this, when the market opens at midnight, Aura’s valuation will be zero."

Croft’s blood ran cold. The white suit suddenly felt suffocating. "Where is the breach coming from?"

"That's the insane part," David stammered. "It’s not a remote hack. The breach is originating from a localized IP address. It’s coming from your house, Sterling. The East Wing servers."

Croft dropped his crystal tumbler. It shattered on the marble deck.

"Lock down the estate," Croft roared into his earpiece, signaling his head of security. "Nobody leaves! Get a team to my office right now!"
