Chapter 1 - The Echo of a Memory

The freezing wind whipped through the city alleyway, but Eleanor could not feel the bitter cold.
She remained completely frozen on her knees, staring into the terrified eyes of the starving street child.
Julian stood between them, his expensive wool coat rustling as he took a slow, confused step back.
He looked desperately at the elegant woman who had loved and raised him for the past eight years.
His small voice cracked as he asked again who he really was if this poor boy was her true son.
Eleanor reached out with trembling fingers to trace the jagged scar above the street boy's eyebrow.
It was the exact, undeniable mark her infant son had received the night he was tragically stolen from his crib.
The tarnished silver chain around his dirty neck bore the Sterling family crest she had designed herself.
She pulled the trembling, filthy boy into her arms and sobbed violently into his matted hair.
The boy wept silently, clinging to her expensive cashmere coat as if she were his only anchor to the living world.
Julian watched them with a deep, crushing sense of abandonment washing over his young heart.
Eleanor suddenly realized she was terrifying Julian, so she reached out to pull him into the desperate embrace.
She promised both crying boys that they were absolutely safe and that they were all going home together.
The drive back to the sprawling Sterling estate was filled with a heavy, suffocating silence.
The massive iron security gates slowly parted to reveal the glowing, fortress-like mansion on the hill.
Eleanor led both boys into the grand foyer, completely ignoring the shocked gasps of her uniformed household staff.
Her husband, Richard, stepped out of his mahogany study with a deep scowl on his handsome face.
He demanded to know why a filthy beggar was dripping melted snow onto his imported Italian marble floor.
Eleanor looked him dead in the eye and declared that they had finally found their missing son, Leo.
Richard dropped his crystal glass, letting the expensive bourbon and glass shatter into a hundred pieces across the floor.
He did not look relieved, happy, or even remotely confused by the impossible miracle.
He stared at the shivering boy named Leo with a flash of absolute, undeniable terror.
Richard quickly pulled a cheap burner phone from his pocket and dialed an unsaved number.

He turned away from his family and whispered a frantic command that made Eleanor's blood run entirely cold.
He told the unknown person on the other end that the asset had somehow survived and they needed a cleanup crew immediately.
