Chapter 8 - The Standoff

Viktor slowly turned his head to look at us through the thick observation glass.

He smiled arrogantly and ordered me through the intercom to drop all of my weapons immediately.

He promised that if I did not comply, he would blow the doctor's brains out right in front of my sleeping children.

I knew Dr. Yates was the only person on earth capable of performing the complex bone marrow transplant.

I slowly lowered my assault rifle to the floor and kicked my sidearm away across the tiles.

Elara mirrored my movements, completely surrendering her weapons to save the innocent doctor.

Viktor laughed triumphantly and pulled a glowing blue syringe from his tailored suit pocket.

He proudly displayed the vial, declaring it to be the only existing dose of the neurotoxin antidote.

He taunted us, saying he was going to crush the vial under his heavy boot just to watch my children suffer.

Viktor raised his foot and prepared to smash the fragile glass syringe onto the sterile floor.

Without a single second of hesitation, Elara flicked her wrist with blinding, impossible speed.

A perfectly hidden throwing knife shot out from her sleeve and sailed through the open doorway.

The sharp blade buried itself deep into Viktor's wrist, completely severing the tendons in his hand.

Viktor screamed in agonizing pain as he dropped the blue syringe and his silver handgun simultaneously.

He collapsed onto his knees, clutching his bleeding arm and cursing loudly in Russian.

As he fell, his finger twitched violently against the trigger of his falling weapon.

The gun fired a single, stray bullet that slammed directly into the cracked observation glass of the twins' chamber.

The weakened glass shattered completely, sending thousands of sharp fragments raining down onto the sterile beds.
