Chapter 1 - The Arrest

The flashing lights of the unmarked cruisers painted the rain-slicked driveway in jagged strokes of red and blue.
I sat behind the wheel of my sedan, my hands resting calmly on the leather steering wheel.
Through the towering glass windows of the hotel lobby, I could see the chaos unfolding.
The ballroom doors had been thrown wide open.
Richard Vale, stripped of his smug confidence, was being backed against a marble pillar by two federal agents.
Emma stood frozen in her designer wedding gown, the cream envelope slipping from her trembling fingers.
The documents scattered across the polished floor, exposing the truth to anyone who cared to look.
I watched as Blake, the man who had promised her the world, slowly backed away from his new wife.
He did not reach out to comfort her.
Instead, he raised his hands in surrender as a third agent approached him.
My phone buzzed in the cup holder.
It was my attorney, Marcus, the man who had helped me uncover the forgery.
"They have Richard in custody," Marcus said through the speaker.
"And Blake?" I asked, keeping my eyes on the lobby.
"Claiming total ignorance, just like we predicted," Marcus replied.
Inside, I saw Blake pointing a finger directly at Emma.
Even through the glass, I could read his lips framing the words that would destroy her world.
He was telling the agents that she was the one who managed the estate transfers.
My daughter, who had humiliated me in front of hundreds of guests, was now being offered up as the sacrificial lamb by the family she had chosen over me.
Emma’s eyes darted frantically around the room until they met mine through the rain-streaked window.
The realization of her mistake crashed over her, visible in the sudden slump of her shoulders.
I shifted the car into drive.
"Let the authorities handle it," I told Marcus, preparing to leave my only child to the fate she had engineered.
"There is one more thing you need to know," Marcus interrupted, his voice losing its professional calm.
"The FBI just raided Richard's private safe, and they found a second contract."
I pressed the brake pedal.
"What contract?" I demanded.
"Blake didn't just forge your signature on the orchard deed," Marcus revealed.
"He had Emma sign a spousal liability waiver right before the ceremony."
My blood ran completely cold.

"Meaning?" I asked, though I already knew the answer.
"Meaning Blake just legally transferred fourteen million dollars of cartel debt directly into your daughter's name."
