Chapter 2 - Academic Warfare

The girl’s name was Harper Cole.

By third period, the whispers had saturated the campus. Harper wasn't in the social registry. She didn't have a recognizable surname. Her files were completely sealed. To the elite predators of Edenbridge, a lack of verifiable wealth was blood in the water.

Advanced Placement Macroeconomics was Serena’s domain. The teacher, Mr. Harrison, was practically on the Sterling payroll, securing his summer home in the Hamptons through "generous donations" from Serena’s father.

Serena sat in the center of the front row. Harper took a seat in the back corner, pulling a battered notebook from her canvas bag.

"Today, we discuss aggressive market acquisitions," Mr. Harrison announced, writing on the smartboard. "Can anyone define a hostile takeover and its primary mechanism?"

Serena raised her hand gracefully. "A hostile takeover occurs when an acquiring company attempts to buy a target company against the wishes of its board, usually by making a tender offer directly to the shareholders at a premium. My father executed one last quarter. It requires immense capital and a ruthless strategy."

"Flawless as always, Serena," Mr. Harrison beamed.

"Actually," a voice drifted from the back of the room. "That’s a very outdated, brute-force perspective."

The room went dead silent. Mr. Harrison blinked. Serena whipped her head around, glaring at Harper.

"Excuse me?" Serena challenged, her voice cold.

Harper leaned back in her chair, twirling a cheap ballpoint pen. "Paying a massive premium directly to shareholders is an amateur move. It drains liquidity. A modern, efficient hostile takeover is done through a proxy fight. You don't buy the shares; you buy the board. You manipulate the narrative, devalue the target's public perception, install your own directors, and have them vote for the acquisition from the inside. It’s cheaper, faster, and infinitely more devastating. But I suppose brute force is all the Sterlings know."

A few students in the room shifted uncomfortably. Mason Vance actually smirked, quickly covering it with his hand.

Mr. Harrison cleared his throat nervously. "Well, Ms. Cole, while a proxy fight is a method, Serena's definition is the textbook standard."

"The textbook was written in 2012," Harper replied seamlessly. "The market has evolved. Some people just haven't."

Serena’s face flushed a deep, violent crimson. Nobody corrected her. Nobody outsmarted her. She turned back to the front of the room, her mind racing. Harper Cole wasn't just insolent; she was dangerous. And Serena knew exactly how to deal with threats. She pulled out her phone beneath her desk and sent a single text to her private investigator.
