Chapter 10 - The New Order

Harper stood at the apex of the grand marble staircase the next morning. The Pacific saltwater breeze felt cleaner today.

She wore her vintage leather jacket and dark aviators. Julian stood to her right.

The morning procession was different. There were still Bentleys and G-Wagons, but the suffocating atmosphere of fear was gone. The brutal arithmetic of Edenbridge had been rewritten. Worth was no longer calculated by the logo on your shoes, because everyone knew that the girl who owned the entire school wore combat boots.

A standard, yellow public taxi pulled up to the circular driveway.

Serena stepped out. She was wearing plain jeans and a simple sweater. No jewelry. No designer bags. She looked exhausted, her eyes red and swollen. She was here to clean out her locker.

As Serena walked up the stairs, the students parted, but they didn't sneer. They just watched.

Serena stopped a few steps below Harper, keeping her head down. "I'm just getting my things," she whispered, her voice hollow.

"Serena," Harper said.

Serena flinched, bracing for the final humiliation.

Harper pulled a thick envelope from her jacket pocket and held it out.

Serena looked up, confused, and slowly took the envelope. She opened it. Inside were enrollment papers for a prestigious, private boarding school in Switzerland. The tuition was paid in full for the next two years.

"What is this?" Serena choked out.

"It's a second chance," Harper said smoothly. "My father liquidated your father's company. He didn't liquidate you. You're a brilliant girl, Serena. You understand economics, strategy, and power. You just used it to be a tyrant."

Tears welled in Serena’s eyes. "Why are you helping me? After everything I did to you?"

"Because crushing you when you have nothing doesn't make me powerful. It just makes me you," Harper said, taking off her aviators. "Go to Switzerland. Learn how to build something instead of tearing people down. If you survive, maybe Vanguard Holdings will hire you in five years."

Serena clutched the papers to her chest. For the first time in her life, the mask of the elite ice queen shattered completely, revealing a grateful, terrified girl. She nodded, unable to speak, and walked into the school to pack her life away.

Julian looked at Harper, a slow smile spreading across his face. "Mercy, Harper? I didn't think you had it in you."

May you like

"It's not mercy, Julian," Harper said, putting her sunglasses back on and looking out over her newly conquered kingdom. "It's an investment. And a Cole never makes a bad investment."

Harper turned and walked through the heavy mahogany doors, leaving the ghosts of the old Edenbridge behind, ready to build a new empire.
