Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Defense

The bunker shook violently as the first explosive charge detonated against the blast doors.
Dust rained down from the ceiling, but the heavy steel held firm.
"They are going to breach within five minutes," Cole yelled over the noise.
"We need to activate the external defense grid."
I ran to the secondary control terminal in the medical bay and bypassed the lockdown sequence.
I slammed my palm onto the emergency activation panel.
On the monitors, hidden panels across the property's exterior ripped open.
Automated, heavy-caliber machine gun turrets rose from the ground and instantly opened fire.
The military strike team scrambled for cover, entirely unprepared for a war-zone level of defense.
I watched as the electrified perimeter fence powered on, throwing brilliant blue sparks into the dark night.
The soldiers were forced to retreat back into the tree line, abandoning their breach attempt.
The automated turrets spun down, scanning the empty driveway for any remaining targets.
The monitors showed the military strike team retreating in absolute panic.
I turned back to the examination table and let out a breathless gasp of hope.
Elias took a deep, clear breath, his color finally returning to normal as the makeshift antidote worked.
We had actually won.
The bunker was completely secure, the army was repelled, and my brother was going to live.
I slumped against the cold steel wall, letting out a sob of pure, unadulterated relief.
Cole smiled at me, his eyes warm and incredibly comforting.
Then he calmly raised his pistol and shot my brother directly in the chest.
As Elias's body hit the floor, the bunker's artificial intelligence chimed cheerfully.
"Welcome back, Commander Cole," my father's recorded voice echoed through the speakers.
Cole stepped over my brother's bleeding body, looked directly into the security camera, and smiled.
"The asset is secured," Cole said perfectly in Russian.

My mother stepped out of the shadows, kissed Cole affectionately on the cheek, and looked at me with dead eyes.
"You did beautifully, darling," she smiled.
