Chapter 6 - The Corrupt Shield

The revelation of Vincenzo's ultimate betrayal hung heavily in the freezing air, but Salvatore's expression remained carved from absolute ice.
He had suspected a rat within his inner circle for months, but hearing his oldest friend's name spoken by a cheap street mercenary ignited a dark, violent rage in his chest.
Salvatore took another slow, submissive step forward, keeping his empty hands raised in the universal gesture of surrender.
The hitman laughed triumphantly, briefly shifting his gaze down to Salvatore's empty hands to ensure the threat was neutralized.
That single split-second of arrogant distraction was the last mistake the mercenary would ever make.
With a blinding flick of his wrist, a hidden, razor-sharp throwing knife slid from a concealed sheath in Salvatore's sleeve directly into his palm.
He launched the heavy steel blade with terrifying velocity, driving it perfectly into the vulnerable gap between the hitman's tactical vest and his throat.
The mercenary made a wet, choking sound, immediately dropping his rifle and clutching his neck as he collapsed lifelessly into the bloodstained snow.
Brenda dropped to her knees, hyperventilating violently as she stared at the dead man bleeding out just inches from her expensive shoes.
Salvatore did not hesitate for a fraction of a second, sprinting forward to scoop up his discarded pistol from the snowbank.
He grabbed the paralyzed manager roughly by her arm and hauled her to her feet, violently shoving her toward the open kitchen door.
"Get inside and lock the steel deadbolt right now!" Salvatore roared, waving for Maria to grab Giana and run into the building.
They scrambled frantically through the loading dock entrance, the heavy steel security door slamming shut just as the deafening wail of police sirens pierced the night.
Through the reinforced peephole, Salvatore watched the alley rapidly fill with flashing red and blue lights.
But a cold knot formed in his stomach when he noticed the heavily armored tactical vehicles were completely unmarked, lacking any official city insignias.

The men pouring out of the vehicles were dressed in police uniforms, but they moved with the undisciplined, aggressive swagger of cartel enforcers.
The lead officer casually racked a heavy shotgun, staring directly at the security camera above the door with a confident, murderous smile.
