Chapter 2 - The Silent Order

Marcus stood at six-foot-four, a mountain of muscle wrapped tightly in a tailored black suit that strained against his broad shoulders.

He had earned his vicious reputation on the unforgiving streets of the south side before transitioning into high-end corporate security.

Brenda offered him a triumphant, sickly sweet smile as she pointed a perfectly manicured finger at the man in the worn coat.

"Marcus, please escort this vagrant off the premises immediately, as he is harassing our guests and refusing to leave."

Marcus turned his heavy gaze toward the problem, his facial muscles tense and ready for a physical altercation.

His eyes locked onto the tired father holding the sleeping child, and the blood instantly drained from his face.

The intimidating head of security froze completely, his massive hand trembling slightly as it hovered over his radio.

He recognized the faded black coat, the sharp angle of the jaw, and the quiet, deadly stillness of the man standing before him.

Salvatore Marchetti was a ghost to the public, but to the men who actually ran the violent underworld of the city, he was an absolute god.

Salvatore maintained unbroken eye contact with Marcus, his expression remaining perfectly blank and unreadable.

With a microscopic, almost imperceptible tilt of his head, Salvatore gave the silent command for his former enforcer to play along with the charade.

Marcus swallowed heavily, a bead of cold sweat forming at his temple as he stepped forward with forced, mechanical stiffness.

"Sir, I am going to have to ask you to step outside," Marcus said, his voice lacking its usual aggressive authority.

Salvatore nodded slowly, adjusting Giana on his shoulder and turning his back on the triumphant smirk plastered across Brenda's face.

He walked out through the heavy glass doors, stepping back into the freezing, relentless snowfall of the unforgiving winter night.

Marcus followed him to the edge of the awning, desperately wanting to apologize, but Salvatore simply raised a hand to silence him before walking away.

Inside the warm restaurant, the delicate illusion of safety continued to hum along to the sound of soft jazz and clinking silverware.

But at table four, a sharply dressed man in a tailored grey suit slowly lowered his leather-bound wine list.

The man had not been looking at Brenda, nor had he been paying attention to the frightened waitress.

He had been staring directly at the reflection in the gilded mirror, recognizing the untouchable mafia boss who had just walked out into the cold night without his usual army of bodyguards.

The man at table four calmly pulled an encrypted, untraceable burner phone from his breast pocket.

He quickly typed out a single, deadly text message confirming that the king of the city was completely vulnerable in the back alley.
