Chapter 6 - The Empty Incubators

The heavy concrete floor shuddered as Adrian violently slammed his older brother down.
Julian scrambled desperately to aim the suppressed pistol, but Adrian kicked the weapon across the dark room.
Adrian rained brutal, unforgiving punches down upon Julian's face, completely shattering his aristocratic nose.
Julian finally went entirely limp, unconscious and bleeding heavily on the cold basement floor.
Adrian stood up slowly, his chest heaving as he wiped the blood from his own bruised knuckles.
He rushed over to Claire, lifting her gently into his strong arms as if she weighed absolutely nothing.
He pressed his forehead against hers, tears streaming down his face as he repeatedly begged for her forgiveness.
Claire held onto his broad shoulders tightly, feeling the familiar, comforting warmth she had missed for eight agonizing months.
They did not have time to discuss the trauma of the past year or the pain they had both endured.
They urgently needed to get back upstairs, secure their newborn babies, and run as far away from this corrupt family as possible.
Adrian grabbed the discarded pistol from the floor and quickly checked the heavy steel door.
He bypassed the biometric lock by smashing the keypad with the heavy metal grip of the gun.
They rushed back down the concrete hallway and scrambled into the waiting service elevator.
Adrian hit the button for the neonatal intensive care unit, holding Claire tightly against his chest as the elevator ascended.
The doors chimed open, and Adrian led the way, keeping the weapon raised and ready for a violent confrontation.
They burst through the heavy glass doors of the intensive care unit, completely prepared to fight Victoria's massive security team.
Instead, they found the sprawling, highly advanced medical room completely and utterly abandoned.
The harsh fluorescent lights hummed loudly over rows of empty nurses' stations.
Claire sprinted toward the back corner of the room, completely ignoring the burning pain in her fresh surgical wound.
She reached the designated spot and let out a blood-curdling scream of pure, unfiltered terror.
Both of the clear plastic incubators were completely empty, the vital monitor wires ripped forcefully from the machines.
Lying directly in front of the empty incubators was Sarah, the brave young nurse who had tried to help Claire escape.
Sarah was bleeding heavily from a severe head wound, but her eyes fluttered open when Adrian checked her pulse.

She grabbed Adrian's bloody surgical scrubs with trembling, weak fingers.
She gasped that Victoria had just taken the babies to the private helipad on the hospital roof.
