Chapter 6 - The Ghost Network

Camilo shoved Joanna and Gabriel flat into the tall reeds.
The police spotlight swept over the mud just inches from their heads.
He knew Silas had tipped off the corrupt officers on his payroll.
They waited until the patrol boat passed by before crawling up the embankment.
Camilo led them to an abandoned subway maintenance station he used for emergencies.
Inside the dusty room, there were medical supplies, clean clothes, and untraceable cash.
Joanna carefully cleaned and bandaged Gabriel's shoulder while Camilo watched the perimeter.
Gabriel took a painkiller and leaned his head against the concrete wall.
Camilo asked Joanna where the floor safe was located.
She said it was beneath the Persian rug in the estate's library.
Camilo realized returning to his own home would be a suicide mission.
Silas would have the estate surrounded by his most loyal mercenaries.
Camilo told them he had to call in a favor from an outsider.
He picked up the burner phone and dialed a Chicago number he had not called in five years.
The man on the other end was Victor Romano, the boss of the South Side syndicate.
Camilo offered Victor full control of the Cicero territory in exchange for an extraction team.
Victor chuckled darkly through the receiver.
Victor agreed to send his men to secure the estate perimeter.
However, Victor demanded one additional condition for his help.
Victor wanted the seventy-one thousand dollar debt contract transferred to him.
Camilo refused immediately, stating Joanna was under his protection.
Victor said that was a shame and hung up the phone.
Camilo cursed and threw the phone against the wall.
Gabriel stood up slowly, wincing in pain.
He told Camilo that they were going to have to break into their own fortress alone.

Joanna stepped forward, her damaged hands clenched into tight fists.
She told them there was a servant's entrance through the wine cellar that Silas did not know about.
