Chapter 8 - The Raid

The State Police cruiser tore down the highway at ninety miles an hour, its sirens screaming to clear the traffic.
I sat in the back seat, trembling as the lead trooper reviewed the documents I had given him.
"This is a bulletproof motive, Ms. Vance," the trooper said, looking back at me through the metal grate.
"Your father's signature is on every page of this trust transfer."
"Just please tell me we aren't too late," I begged, wiping a smear of mud from my cheek.
The hospital came into view, its massive glass doors shining in the late morning sun.
Four more State Police vehicles swarmed the parking lot, blocking every possible exit.
Armed troopers poured out of the cars, charging into the main lobby with their rifles drawn.
I ran inside right behind them, pointing frantically toward the pediatric intensive care unit on the third floor.
When the elevator doors opened on the third floor, chaos immediately erupted.
My mother was standing outside Lily's room, arguing furiously with the head nurse.
Vanessa was frantically trying to wheel Lily's hospital bed out into the hallway, despite the monitors violently beeping.
"Stop right there!" the lead trooper roared, raising his weapon.
My mother froze, her elegant facade finally crumbling into absolute terror.
Vanessa let go of the hospital bed, holding her hands up in surrender as she began to sob hysterically.
"It was his idea!" Vanessa screamed, pointing wildly at my mother.
"They made me do it, I didn't want to hurt the baby!"
Troopers slammed my sister against the wall, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists.
My mother tried to run toward the fire exit, but two officers tackled her to the floor, reading her Miranda rights as she thrashed.
I ignored all of them and ran straight to my daughter's bedside.
Lily was pale, but her chest was rising and falling in a steady, beautiful rhythm.
The head nurse quickly reattached the IV lines that Vanessa had tried to rip out.
"We managed to flush the toxins out of her kidneys just in time," the nurse whispered to me with tears in her eyes.
"She is going to make a full recovery."
I collapsed against the side of the bed, burying my face in Lily's purple blanket and weeping with sheer gratitude.
The nightmare was finally over.
An hour later, a trooper walked into the room with a gentle smile on his face.
"We found your father unconscious in his study, and we apprehended the CPS worker trying to cross state lines," the trooper announced.
"They are all facing multiple counts of attempted murder and federal conspiracy."
I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for my entire life.
"What about Marcus?" I asked, my heart aching for my fiancé.

"We cleared his name and ordered his immediate release," the trooper replied.
"He is waiting for you downstairs."
