Chapter 10 - The False Victory

"What are you doing, Marcus?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
He didn't answer immediately.
He walked over to the kitchen counter and picked up his leather work bag, the one he claimed he had left at the house.
He unzipped the top pocket and reached inside.
"The police were very thorough today," Marcus said, his tone entirely too casual for a man who had just been in handcuffs.
"They arrested your father, your mother, your sister, and that annoying social worker."
He turned around to face me, holding a small, orange prescription bottle in his hand.
It was the exact same bottle of heavy sedatives the police had found in the dumpster.
"They arrested everyone who stood between me and that fifty million dollar trust fund," Marcus smiled, his eyes completely dead.
My blood turned to ice in my veins as the horrifying truth finally clicked into place.
My family was cruel, and they wanted the money, but they hadn't been smart enough to pull this off alone.
Marcus had manipulated them into making the first move.
He had planted his own medication in the trash to frame himself, knowing my wealthy family would immediately try to capitalize on it and take the fall.
He had orchestrated the entire bloodbath to legally eliminate my family and leave me isolated with a massive fortune.
"You played them," I gasped, stepping backward toward the hallway.
"They were greedy, Camille," Marcus chuckled, stepping slowly toward me.
"I just pointed them in the right direction and let them dig their own graves."
He unscrewed the cap of the prescription bottle and poured a handful of the blue pills into his palm.
"Now, there is only one little obstacle left before you and I can live happily ever after," he whispered.
Suddenly, the bedroom door creaked open behind me.
Lily stood in the doorway, clutching her purple blanket, her small eyes wide with absolute terror.
She pointed a trembling finger at Marcus and looked up at me with tears streaming down her face.
May you like
"Mommy," Lily whimpered, her voice shaking uncontrollably.
"That's the man who put me in the dark box."
