Chapter 9 - The Final Breath

Damien absolutely did not fall.

He grabbed Vincent's wrist, twisted it until the bone audibly snapped, and drove his own tactical knife directly into the traitor's heart.

Vincent Hale collapsed to the rusty floor, completely dead before he even stopped moving.

Damien stumbled backward heavily, clutching his profusely bleeding chest as the adrenaline finally wore off.

Maren rushed quickly to his side, pressing her trembling hands desperately against his terrible, bubbling wound.

"Stay with me," Maren sobbed, her hot tears mixing completely with his warm blood.

Damien smiled weakly, his dark, terrifying eyes softening beautifully as he looked down at his crying daughter.

His elite medical extraction team finally swarmed the shipping container, loading him quickly onto a mobile stretcher.

They rushed him into the back of a heavily armored, fully equipped medical transport vehicle.

Maren sat right beside him, holding his cold hand as the vehicle sped frantically toward their private surgical facility.

The heart monitor attached to Damien's chest began to beep at a dangerously slow, erratic pace.

"Take care of our little girl," Damien whispered, his voice barely audible over the roaring engine.

Maren shook her head violently, absolutely refusing to accept this tragic, unfair ending.

"You promised me we would be a family!" she cried, kissing his pale, blood-stained knuckles.

The heart monitor suddenly let out a single, continuous, high-pitched tone.

Damien's hand went completely limp in hers as his eyes rolled slowly back into his head.
