Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Files

The silence in the penthouse was sudden and suffocating.

Andrew felt the air completely leave his lungs as he stared at the boy.

He dropped to his knees so he was at eye level with Ethan, his hands gripping the child's small shoulders.

He asked Ethan to repeat what he had just said, praying he had misheard the impossible words.

Ethan shrank back slightly, intimidated by the sudden intensity in the billionaire's eyes.

The boy stammered that the lady with the sad smile always visited the basement wing of the Evergreen Institute.

Andrew knew that Emily had died on a rainy highway, her body identified and buried in a closed casket.

He had stood in the freezing rain and watched the dirt fall over the grave of his entire future.

But Ethan's voice held the undeniable, innocent honesty of a child who did not know how to lie.

Andrew stood up abruptly and pulled his encrypted cell phone from his pocket.

He dialed the direct number for Marcus, his ruthless and highly efficient head of private security.

Marcus answered on the first ring, his deep voice carrying the discipline of a former military operative.

Andrew ordered Marcus to look into a place called the Evergreen Institute and to find everything he could in the next ten minutes.

He paced the length of the living room, his mind racing with terrifying, fractured possibilities.

If Emily was somehow alive, then whose body had he buried in that cemetery?

If she had survived the crash, why would she be hiding in a facility with a terrified runaway child?

Ethan sat quietly on the sofa, pulling his knees to his chest as he watched Andrew pace.

The boy apologized softly, thinking he had said something wrong to make his savior angry.

Andrew immediately stopped pacing and reassured the child that he was not angry at him.

His phone buzzed violently in his hand, displaying Marcus's secure number.

Andrew answered the call, demanding to know what his security chief had found.

Marcus sounded deeply unsettled, an emotion he rarely ever displayed.

He explained that the Evergreen Institute was a highly classified, off-the-books medical research facility.

The most disturbing detail was not the facility's secrecy, but its ownership.

Marcus revealed that Evergreen was completely funded by a hidden subsidiary of Andrew's own technology empire.

Andrew felt the room spin, realizing his own wealth was funding the nightmare Ethan had escaped.

He ordered Marcus to immediately download the facility's personnel files and secure the data.

Marcus typed frantically on his keyboard, but suddenly let out a sharp curse over the line.

He told Andrew that a massive remote wipe command had just been triggered from inside the company server.

Someone with top-tier executive clearance was aggressively destroying Ethan's files in real time.

Before Marcus could trace the unauthorized user, a deafening sound echoed through the phone speaker.

It was the unmistakable, explosive crack of a suppressed gunshot.

Marcus let out a choking gasp, and the phone line went entirely dead.
