Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Empire

Grant froze instantly, the syringe hovering just millimeters from my exposed neck.
The deafening roar of the helicopter blades drowned out everything else as federal agents repelled down onto the roof.
Grant slowly released my wrist, dropping the syringe onto the tar paper and raising his hands in absolute defeat.
Agent Carter stepped off the landing skid, aiming his service weapon directly at my husband's chest.
"Grant Whitmore, you are under arrest for federal racketeering, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit murder," Carter announced.
Two agents roughly pinned Grant against the air conditioning unit, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his expensive suit.
"You have absolutely no evidence," Grant yelled over the noise, trying desperately to maintain his arrogant composure.
Agent Carter smiled grimly, pulling a digital audio recorder from his tactical vest.
"Your mistress just accepted a federal plea deal twenty minutes ago," Carter shouted back.
Rachel had been sitting in police custody for the hit-and-run, and the moment the FBI arrived, she had completely folded.
She gave them the locations of the offshore accounts, the details of the fake charity, and a full confession.
She admitted that Grant had explicitly ordered her to run Eli over to eliminate him as a beneficiary of the trust.
Grant's face drained of all color as he realized the woman he had destroyed his family for had traded him for a lighter sentence.
He looked at me with wild, desperate eyes, finally dropping the mask of the untouchable billionaire.
"Mara, tell them this is a mistake, I am still your husband," he pleaded pathetically.
I pulled Eli tightly against my chest, covering his ears so he wouldn't hear his father begging like a coward.
"You haven't been a husband or a father for a very long time, Grant," I replied coldly.
I watched with immense satisfaction as the agents dragged him toward the roof access door, leading him down to the waiting cruisers.
Agent Carter escorted Eli and me down safely, placing us in the back of an armored federal vehicle.
The streets were filled with flashing red and blue lights, a stark contrast to the darkness we had been running through.
We were taken to a secure federal safe house, where a team of specialized pediatric doctors finally examined Eli's leg properly.
Over the next few weeks, the entire Whitmore empire crumbled under the weight of the massive federal investigation.
The board of directors was indicted, the illegal black market hospital wing was shut down, and the corrupt judge was disbarred.
I exercised my legal proxy rights, liquidating the remaining legitimate assets of the company to establish a genuine pediatric charity.
Rachel Palmer was sentenced to twenty years in federal prison for attempted vehicular manslaughter.
Grant received a lifetime sentence in a maximum-security federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole.
I had finally won the war, securing a peaceful, beautiful future for my son and myself.

We moved to a quiet coastal town, miles away from the toxicity of Baltimore and the ghosts of our past.
I stood on the porch of our new beach house, watching Eli run happily along the sand, his leg perfectly healed.
