Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

The ocean breeze carried the sound of Eli's joyful laughter up to the wooden deck where I was sitting.
He was chasing a small seagull, his face glowing with a healthy, vibrant energy that I had not seen in months.
Our new life was entirely peaceful, built on the ashes of an empire that had tried to destroy us.
The federal government had unfrozen my personal assets, allowing me to comfortably purchase this small slice of paradise.
I sipped my morning coffee, reflecting on the absolute justice that had finally been served.
Grant's final appeal had been denied just yesterday, cementing his permanent residency in a concrete cell.
The news outlets had moved on from the scandal, and our names were no longer splashed across the front pages.
We were simply a mother and son, completely free to define our own happiness without fear or manipulation.
I walked down the wooden stairs to the beach, holding my hand out for Eli to grab as we walked along the shoreline.
He looked up at me, his bright eyes reflecting the clear blue sky above us.
"I really like it here, Mom," he said, skipping a smooth stone across the gentle waves.
"I like it here too, Eli, and we never have to leave," I promised him, squeezing his small hand tightly.
We spent the entire afternoon building sandcastles and collecting seashells, completely insulated in our own perfect world.
Later that evening, after Eli was asleep, I walked out to the metal mailbox at the end of our long driveway.
Inside, resting beneath a stack of local advertisements, was a thick envelope bearing the official crest of a private Swiss laboratory.
I tore the heavy paper open, scanning the complex genetic results printed in stark black ink across the pristine white page.

Grant Whitmore had never been a match for Eli's rare blood type because Grant was never his biological father.
The real father was a dangerous man I thought had died six years ago, and a black SUV was currently idling at the end of my street.
