Chapter 5 - The Ambush

The terrifying sound of shattering glass filled the cabin as the driver's window completely collapsed.
Dominic threw himself over us, shielding us from the shower of sharp fragments.
"Stay down and do not make a sound," he ordered in a harsh whisper.
I could hear heavy boots splashing against the wet pavement outside the vehicle.
We were trapped inside the armored SUV in the middle of a deserted industrial street.
Dominic kicked the heavy door open, sending it crashing into an approaching gunman.
He moved with terrifying speed, firing twice into the darkness before the attacker even hit the ground.
"Run toward the warehouse on the left," Dominic shouted, dragging me by my waist.
I held Lily so tightly against my chest that my arms ached with the strain.
We sprinted across the dark street, our shoes splashing loudly in the deep puddles.
Gunfire erupted behind us, sparking wildly against the brick walls of the alley.
Dominic provided covering fire, taking down another shadowy figure with ruthless precision.
We burst through the rusted metal doors of an abandoned textile factory.
The air inside smelled deeply of mold, engine oil, and decaying wood.
Dominic quickly dragged a heavy iron workbench across the entrance to barricade the door.
He was breathing heavily, and I noticed a dark, spreading stain on his white shirt.
"You are bleeding," I gasped, my nurse instincts immediately kicking in.
"It is just a graze, focus on keeping her quiet," Dominic grunted, leaning against the cold wall.
I set Lily down on a dusty crate and pressed my hands against his side.
The bullet had torn through the muscle just above his ribs, and he was losing blood quickly.
"I need to apply pressure to this wound right now," I insisted, tearing a strip of fabric from my scrubs.
Dominic watched me work, his dark eyes softening just a fraction.
"You are remarkably calm for a woman being hunted by the cartel," he noted.
"I work in an emergency room, chaos is my specialty," I replied, tying the makeshift bandage tightly.
A loud, metallic banging echoed from the heavy iron door we had just barricaded.
"They are planting breaching charges on the hinges," Dominic realized grimly.

He pulled his last spare magazine from his pocket and loaded his weapon.
Before he could take aim, the massive skylight above us shattered, and three men dropped from the roof on tactical ropes.
