Chapter 4 - The Uninvited Guest

Marcus shoved me brutally against the cold washing machine, the heavy knife glinting dangerously in the dim light.

"Andrew said you might be a problem if you started asking too many questions," Marcus sneered, pressing the cold steel against my throat.

My heart hammered wildly, but I knew the police were listening to every single word through the hidden microphones.

I just needed to keep him talking and stall for enough time until Reynolds realized I was in severe danger.

"Did Andrew also tell you that Katie is awake and gave the police a full description of you?" I lied bravely.

Marcus's eyes widened in sudden panic, and his grip on the knife visibly faltered for a crucial fraction of a second.

"That is completely impossible. I hit her going forty miles an hour; she should be dead!" he hissed aggressively.

"She saw you, Marcus, and she definitely saw Andrew push her right in front of your car," I pushed harder.

Before Marcus could react to my bluff, the laundry room door was kicked completely off its hinges with a deafening crash.

Detective Reynolds burst into the small space with his service weapon drawn, followed instantly by two heavily armed tactical officers.

"Drop the weapon right now, or I will put a bullet right between your eyes!" Reynolds roared with absolute, terrifying authority.

Marcus dropped the knife immediately, raising his hands high as the officers aggressively tackled him to the linoleum floor.

The sound of shattering glass and loud screaming erupted from the main living room as dozens of police officers swarmed the birthday party.

I rushed out into the hallway just in time to see Andrew being violently slammed onto the dining room table by three officers.

His pristine white shirt was ruined, and his arrogant face was completely contorted in sheer, unadulterated panic.

"This is a massive misunderstanding! I want my lawyer immediately!" Andrew screamed wildly as the heavy steel handcuffs clicked securely around his wrists.

Barbara stood completely frozen near her expensive birthday cake, her face as pale as a ghost, unable to comprehend the chaos.

An officer firmly grabbed her arms and began reading her Miranda rights loudly over the noise of the panicked guests.

"You have the right to remain silent, because anything you say about your gambling debts and insurance fraud will be used against you," the officer stated clearly.

I walked slowly over to Andrew, who was struggling pathetically against the strong grip of the arresting officers.

"You really thought I would abandon my daughter for your mother's stupid birthday dinner?" I asked him coldly.

Andrew glared at me with pure, unfiltered hatred, his polite, charming facade completely and permanently shattered.

"You are nothing without me and this family, Amanda!" he spat viciously.

"I am a mother who just stopped two pathetic monsters from murdering her child," I replied, turning my back on him forever.

As they dragged Andrew and Barbara out the front door, the confused party guests were frantically escorted out by the remaining police.

Reynolds walked up to me, placing a comforting, heavy hand on my trembling shoulder.

"We got everything on tape, Amanda. The confession, the money transfer, and the hitman. They are going away for a very long time."

I let out a massive breath I felt like I had been holding for two straight days, completely overwhelmed by profound relief.

"I need to get back to the hospital immediately. I need to tell Katie she is finally safe," I said urgently.

Reynolds nodded and offered to personally drive me back to the intensive care unit in his unmarked cruiser.

We drove through the quiet night streets, the flashing red and blue lights clearing a rapid path directly to the hospital.

I sprinted through the sliding glass doors, bypassing the front desk entirely and running straight toward Katie's room.

I burst into the sterile room, eager to wrap my arms around my brave, incredible daughter.

But the hospital bed was completely empty, and the vital sign monitors were completely powered off.

A nurse was actively stripping the bedsheets, looking at me with a deeply confused expression.

"Where is my daughter? Where is Katie?" I screamed, absolute panic completely seizing my throat.

The nurse looked at her clipboard, frowning deeply.

"Her father just checked her out of the hospital twenty minutes ago against medical advice," the nurse replied.
