Chapter 9 - The Missing Pieces

The frantic aftermath of the cliffside rescue was a chaotic blur of flashing lights and heavy rain.

Federal paramedics rushed forward, loading me onto a secure stretcher to stabilize my shattered leg.

Agent Vance sat on the back of an ambulance, letting a medic tend to his severe gunshot wound.

Dozens of FBI tactical teams meticulously combed the dark forest, searching desperately for any sign of Claire.

But the treacherous mountain terrain provided a perfect, deadly cover for the desperate woman.

"She used the complete chaos of the cliff fall to slip away into the dense woods," Vance explained grimly.

He leaned against the ambulance doors, looking at me with genuine, deep concern in his eyes.

"We have checkpoints set up on every single road leaving the county, she will not get far."

I nodded slowly, exhausted beyond all rational measure as the heavy painkillers finally kicked in.

I was safely transported to a highly secure private hospital room in downtown Knoxville.

Two armed federal agents stood completely stoic guard directly outside my solid wooden door.

For the first three days, I slept entirely in a heavily medicated, completely dreamless state.

On the fourth morning, Vance walked into my room wearing a sharp, dark suit instead of a raincoat.

His arm was neatly wrapped in a white sling, and he carried a thick, heavy legal briefcase.

"The forensic teams finally managed to recover Evan's body from the lower gorge basin," Vance reported softly.

I let out a long, heavy breath that I felt like I had been holding for an entire week.

The horrific nightmare of raising a psychopathic murderer was finally, officially over.

"We also seized all of Evan's offshore banking assets and completely froze the illicit accounts," Vance continued.

He opened the heavy briefcase and placed a thick stack of certified legal documents on my tray table.

"The federal court has officially recognized you as the sole, legitimate inheritor of David's entire estate."

I stared at the paperwork in sheer disbelief, the massive weight of the reality finally settling in.

"What about the corrupt county sheriff?" I asked, my voice slightly raspy from the heavy oxygen tubes.

"He took a full plea deal and completely surrendered his entire corrupt department to federal oversight," Vance smiled.

Everything was finally completely resolved, and the monstrous people who hurt me were defeated.

I looked at Vance with a profound, immeasurable sense of gratitude for everything he had done.

"Thank you, Vance, for completely saving my life," I whispered sincerely.

Vance gave a small, polite nod and slowly turned toward the heavy hospital door to leave.

"Get some rest, Sarah, you have a completely brand new life waiting for you outside," he said.

He closed the door quietly behind him, leaving me completely alone in the peaceful room.

I reached for the remote control to turn on the small television mounted on the wall.
