Chapter 6 - The Betrayal

I stared down the cold, dark barrel of the silver pistol in absolute, horrifying disbelief.

Claire’s eyes were completely devoid of any maternal warmth or basic human empathy.

She had spent fifteen completely agonizing years locked in a subterranean cage.

The prolonged isolation and sheer desperation had entirely destroyed her moral compass.

"I survived a decade of absolute hell while you lived completely comfortably in my beautiful house," Claire sneered bitterly.

Evan slowly picked himself up from the floor, entirely clutching his bruised ribs with a malicious grin.

He completely ignored the unconscious sheriff bleeding heavily on the concrete behind him.

"You really thought she was going to save you, Sarah?" Evan laughed entirely mockingly.

"My mother and I are cut entirely from the exact same ruthless cloth."

He violently grabbed me by the collar of my heavy coat and aggressively yanked me to my feet.

My broken leg flared with absolute, blinding agony, entirely forcing me to completely lean against the cold wall.

Evan pulled a thick, heavy zip-tie from his pocket and violently bound my wrists together.

He then walked over to Vance and aggressively tied the bleeding investigator's hands tightly behind his back.

"We cannot just shoot them down here, Mother," Evan explained entirely calmly.

"The police are actively searching for a suicidal stepmother who entirely lost her mind."

"We have to take them completely to the edge of the Gatlin Gorge and throw them over."

Claire nodded in complete agreement, keeping the heavy pistol entirely leveled at my chest.

They aggressively forced Vance and me out of the hidden underground bunker.

We slowly marched back through the dark, damp mining tunnels toward the terrifying surface.

The freezing mountain rain was still completely pouring down when we finally emerged into the gray daylight.

The massive Gatlin Gorge was only a few hundred yards away from the abandoned ghost town.

The gorge was an entirely bottomless, jagged ravine filled with violently rushing white-water rapids.

If a human body completely fell into that raging river, it would absolutely never be found again.

Every single step I took felt like I was walking entirely on broken glass.

I completely accepted that my life was going to end at the bottom of this miserable mountain.

We finally reached the terrifying, slippery edge of the massive stone cliff.

The deafening roar of the raging river completely drowned out the sound of the heavy rain.

Evan aggressively shoved me forward until my toes were entirely hanging over the deadly abyss.

"Any last completely pathetic words before you jump, Sarah?" Evan shouted over the roaring wind.

I completely closed my eyes, entirely preparing to meet my beloved David in the afterlife.

Suddenly, Vance completely burst into a massive, entirely inappropriate fit of loud laughter.

Evan entirely completely froze, staring at the bleeding investigator in absolute, sheer confusion.

"What is so entirely funny about dying, Vance?" Evan demanded completely angrily.

Vance slowly lifted his chin and smiled an absolutely terrifying, confident smile.

"I find it incredibly hilarious that you actually believed I was a completely amateur private investigator," Vance replied loudly.

He entirely leaned forward and spoke directly into his heavily bloodstained collar.

"This is Special Agent Vance, I need the entire tactical team to move in right now."
