Chapter 2

THE DOCTOR'S PHONE CALL

When I opened my eyes again, I was in a hospital bed.
Bright lights burned above me.
My head throbbed.
My mouth tasted like blood.
Martin stood beside me wearing a mask of fake concern.
My mother sat in a chair nearby.
A doctor entered holding a clipboard.
“What happened?” he asked.
Before I could answer, my mother spoke.
“She slipped while bathing.”
The lie came out smoothly.
Too smoothly.
The doctor didn't respond immediately.
Instead, he looked at my face.
Then my bruised arms.
Then the older scars that years of abuse had left behind.
His expression changed.
“Excuse me for a moment,” he said.
He stepped into the hallway.
Seconds later, I heard him speaking on the phone.
“I need police officers in Emergency Room Three immediately.”
My heart skipped.
Martin's face turned pale.
For the first time in my life, I saw fear in his eyes.
And I knew something he didn't.
