Chapter 1

My Stepfather Beat Me Unconscious—At the Hospital, My Mother Lied to the Doctor, Then He Called 911

The last thing I heard before everything went black was my stepfather laughing.

Martin Graves treated violence like a hobby.

Every day, he found a reason to hurt me.

A plate washed too slowly.

A shirt folded wrong.

A tone of voice he didn't like.

Sometimes he didn't even bother making excuses.

He would sit in his recliner, beer in hand, and call my name.

“Lena. Come here.”

My mother never stopped him.

“Just do what he says,” she would whisper. “Don't make it worse.”

But she made it worse every time she stayed silent.

One night, Martin decided he wanted an audience.

He stood in the living room insulting me while my mother stared at the floor.

“Twenty-two years old and still useless,” he sneered.

I was tired.

Tired of being afraid.

Tired of pretending.

For the first time, I looked him directly in the eye.

“I don't think you're powerful,” I said quietly.

“I think you're predictable.”

The room went silent.

His smile disappeared.

The first punch threw me into the kitchen counter.

The second knocked the air from my lungs.

My mother stood frozen beside the sink.

“Tell her to apologize,” Martin snapped.

“For what?” I asked.

May you like

His fist came down again. My head slammed into the tile floor.

Then everything went dark.
