Chapter 8 - The Reality Check

Ethan and Lily stared at their biological mother as she was dragged away by federal agents.

Vanessa didn't even look at them as she was shoved into the back of a black SUV.

The illusion they had clung to for their entire lives was finally shattered.

I stood in the foyer of my reclaimed home, watching the devastation wash over my stepchildren's faces.

They slowly walked inside, looking around the house as if seeing it for the very first time.

"She was going to leave us," Lily whispered, tears streaming down her pale cheeks.

"She hit Dad, and she was going to steal everything."

Ethan looked at the floor, his broad shoulders slumped in absolute defeat.

"I'm sorry, Claire," Ethan mumbled, his voice barely audible.

"We were so stupid."

I looked at the two young adults I had spent twelve years raising.

I had wiped their tears, paid their bills, and loved them when their own mother refused to.

But an apology born out of sudden desperation was not enough to erase the disrespect they had shown me.

"I accept your apology, Ethan," I said calmly.

"But you are both adults now, and the bank of Claire is permanently closed."

Lily looked up, panic flashing in her eyes.

"But where are we supposed to live?" she asked.

"Dad's accounts are frozen, and the police said the house is a crime scene."

I walked over to my purse and pulled out two crisp hundred-dollar bills.

I placed one in Ethan's hand and one in Lily's hand.

"This will cover a cheap motel for a few nights," I told them.

"I suggest you start looking for jobs tomorrow morning."

Ethan stared at the money, realizing that the safety net they had taken for granted was truly gone.

"You're just going to throw us out?" Ethan asked, a hint of his old entitlement creeping back in.

"I am not throwing you out," I corrected him.

"You told me I wasn't the one who raised you, so I am letting you raise yourselves."

I turned my back on them and walked out the front door to where Marcus was waiting.

As we drove away, I felt an overwhelming sense of freedom.

The next few weeks were a blur of intense legal battles and endless paperwork.

Daniel was formally charged with embezzlement, fraud, and money laundering.

Vanessa and Greg were facing decades in federal prison for their elaborate criminal conspiracy.

I was finally granted a clean divorce, but my financial future was still hanging in the balance.

Marcus called me into his office on a Tuesday morning with a grim expression on his face.

"The federal prosecutors are seizing the Portland house to pay restitution to Daniel's victims," Marcus announced.
