Chapter 4 - The Cell

The cold metal of the handcuffs bit into my wrists as they led me through the bustling lobby.
Marcus stayed right beside me, firing off legal demands and demanding to see the warrant.
The arresting officer stated that Daniel Mercer had filed a formal complaint at dawn.
Daniel claimed I had illegally transferred three hundred thousand dollars from his contracting business into my personal account.
I was booked into the county jail, stripped of my belongings, and placed in a holding cell.
I sat on the hard concrete bench, staring at the grey walls.
Daniel was trying to destroy me before I could expose his massive fraud.
Three agonizing hours passed before Marcus finally walked into the visitation room.
He looked furious, but he slapped a stack of papers down on the metal table.
"I got the charges dropped," Marcus announced.
"I provided the bank records proving you never touched his business accounts."
I let out a shaky breath of relief.
"Then where did the three hundred thousand dollars go?" I asked.
Marcus pulled a specific bank statement from the pile and slid it toward me.
"Daniel transferred the money himself, right after you walked out on Sunday night," Marcus explained.
He pointed to the routing number on the destination account.
"He sent the entire operating budget of his company to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands."
My eyes widened as I processed the magnitude of his deception.
Daniel was intentionally bankrupting his own company to hide the money from the divorce proceedings.
Marcus posted my bail, and we walked out into the rainy afternoon air.
As we approached my rental car, I saw two familiar figures standing by the hood.
Ethan and Lily were waiting for me, both looking drenched and absolutely furious.
"You put our dad in the hospital!" Lily screamed, pointing a shaking finger at me.
I stopped dead in my tracks.
"What are you talking about?" I demanded.
Ethan stepped forward, his fists balled tightly in his jacket pockets.

"Mom called us an hour ago," Ethan yelled.
"She said you hired someone to attack Dad, and he is in the intensive care unit."
