Chapter 9 - The Rescue

I ran down the alley, screaming for help, but the police were all at the front of the building.
The black SUV sped closer and closer to the concrete wall.
Grant pulled himself up, fighting against the brutal wind and the swerving car.
He smashed his elbow into the driver's side window.
The glass shattered inward, showering Mark with dangerous shards.
Mark screamed, instinctively throwing his hands up to protect his face.
He lost control of the steering wheel.
The SUV veered violently away from the wall.
It crashed directly into a stack of heavy industrial dumpsters with a sickening crunch.
The airbags deployed instantly, filling the front seat with white smoke.
The engine hissed and sputtered, completely dead.
I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, terrified of what I might find.
"Grant!" I cried out.
Through the smoke, I saw movement.
Grant rolled off the hood of the car, coughing heavily.
His suit was torn to shreds, and he was bleeding from a cut on his forehead.
But he was alive.
I threw my arms around him, burying my face in his ruined jacket.
"I'm okay, Mom," he panted, hugging me back tightly.
We turned our attention to the wrecked SUV.
Vanessa stumbled out of the passenger side, coughing and crying.
She fell onto the asphalt, completely uninjured but visibly in shock.
Inside the car, Mark was pinned against the steering wheel by the deflated airbag.
He was groaning, entirely trapped by the crushed dashboard.
Suddenly, a dozen police officers swarmed the alley, flashlights cutting through the smoke.
"Nobody move!" an officer shouted, aiming his weapon at the car.
Grant raised his hands slowly.
"We're the victims," Grant said loud and clear.
"The man in the car is Mark Evans. He's wanted for corporate espionage and kidnapping."
Officers rushed forward, pulling Vanessa away and beginning the process of extracting Mark.
One of the paramedics ran over to us and started cleaning the cut on Grant's head.
I looked at my son, feeling a mixture of exhaustion and immense pride.
He had saved his company, exposed his enemies, and survived the night.

It was finally over.
At least, that’s what we thought.
