Chapter 9 - The Fall

Six months later, the Camelback Road house was sold at a bank auction.

Vanessa’s mother eventually grew tired of her daughter’s constant complaining and entitlement, kicking her out of the guest house. With no skills, no credit, and no rich husband to fund her lifestyle, Vanessa was forced to move into a cramped, one-bedroom apartment on the wrong side of Phoenix. She took a job as a receptionist at a mid-tier spa—ironically, a place she used to frequent as a VIP client. The women she used to host at dinner parties now handed her their coats without looking her in the eye.

Marcus, meanwhile, had filed for divorce. The proceedings were swift, as there were virtually no assets left to divide—only debt.

Marcus rented a small studio apartment near the airport. He took a second job working nights at a logistics warehouse to pay off the massive credit card debt Vanessa had saddled him with. The physical labor was exhausting, but it was humbling.

Every night, as he rubbed his aching shoulders, he thought of his father. He remembered the sharp corners of the towels his father used to fold. He remembered the smell of the slow-cooked garlic mushrooms. He realized how much love his father had poured into those silent, unseen tasks.

Marcus wasn't angry anymore. He was just deeply, profoundly ashamed. He had traded gold for cheap plastic, and he was paying the price.
