Chapter 4 - The Repossession

Two weeks later, the facade of Marcus and Vanessa’s perfect life began to publicly crumble.
It happened on a Tuesday afternoon. Vanessa was hosting a luncheon for the charity committee. Five of Phoenix’s wealthiest socialites were sitting in her living room, sipping champagne and discussing floral arrangements, when a heavy diesel tow truck backed into the driveway.
Vanessa froze mid-sentence as a burly man in a high-vis vest walked up to the front door and rang the bell.
"Excuse me, ladies," Vanessa said, forcing a tight, plastic smile. She rushed to the door, opening it just a crack. "Can I help you?"
"Are you Vanessa Pendelton?" the man asked, holding a clipboard.
"Yes, but I'm busy right now—"
"I'm here for the 2024 Malibu Wakeboat and the trailer," the man said loudly. "And the Range Rover, if the keys are available. Got a repossession order for both. Breach of contract on the promissory notes."
The silence in the living room was absolute. The clinking of champagne flutes stopped.
"Keep your voice down!" Vanessa hissed, her face flushing crimson. "This is a mistake. My husband is handling this!"
"Lady, the bank says otherwise. You can give me the keys, or I can hitch them up the hard way. Doesn't matter to me."
Behind her, Vanessa could feel the burning gazes of her "friends." The women who praised her taste and envied her lifestyle were now witnessing her financial ruin in real-time.
She turned back to the living room, tears of absolute humiliation stinging her eyes. Within twenty minutes, the boat and the luxury SUV were towed down the street. Within an hour, every woman at the luncheon had made an excuse to leave. By dinner time, the entire country club knew that the Pendeltons were broke.
When Marcus came home, he found Vanessa sitting on the floor of the empty garage, sobbing hysterically.

"We have to sue him," she screamed at Marcus. "Your father is ruining my life!"
Marcus looked at the empty spaces where their status symbols used to sit. "He didn't ruin our lives, Vanessa," Marcus said, his voice completely hollow. "He just stopped paying for them."
