Chapter 6 - The Mansion Gates

Claire stared at the email on the screen while pure terror gripped her entire body.
Ava was sitting in a vehicle that was rigged to explode the moment David triggered the remote detonator.
Claire grabbed a set of car keys hanging on a hook near the office door and sprinted out of the diner.
She found a small delivery hatchback idling near the kitchen exit and jumped into the driver's seat.
She slammed the gas pedal to the floor, speeding dangerously down the highway toward David’s secluded mansion.
She dialed David's cell phone with her trembling hands, praying he would actually answer.
He picked up on the third ring, laughing maliciously as he asked if she was enjoying her walk in the woods.
Claire screamed at him to get Ava out of the car, explaining that Margaret had double-crossed him and wired the explosive to kill him too.
David scoffed, told her she was a pathetic liar, and abruptly ended the call.
Claire pushed the stolen car to its absolute limits, weaving recklessly through the morning traffic.
She finally reached the towering iron gates of the Donovan estate and smashed the hatchback directly through the wooden security arm.
She skidded to a halt in the circular driveway, completely out of breath.
David’s black SUV was parked near the grand entrance, but the doors were wide open and the engine was off.
Claire ran toward the vehicle, screaming Ava's name into the quiet morning air.
Suddenly, Paige stepped out from behind the front bumper, holding a pair of heavy wire cutters.
May you like
Paige wiped grease from her forehead and pointed to a severed red wire dangling beneath the chassis.
She looked at Claire with tear-filled eyes and said that she had successfully disabled the bomb, but David’s men had already dragged Ava inside the mansion.
