Chapter 5 - Setting the Trap

The comment about the eviction lawyer echoed in my mind for the rest of the week.

My own parents hadn't just asked me for a massive favor; they were actively plotting behind my back to legally seize my home if I refused.

They had been fully prepared to throw me out onto the street to satisfy Claire's manufactured victimhood.

The tiny shred of family loyalty I still possessed instantly evaporated into pure, cold determination.

I spent the next three days preparing my apartment for the most important dinner of my life.

I scrubbed the floors, polished the cheap countertops, and made sure my home looked as welcoming as possible.

But my real preparation was happening in the digital realm.

I took all the screenshots, the timestamped club videos, the hiking photos, and the spa receipts, and compiled them into a single presentation.

I placed Maya’s damning text message right at the very end of the slideshow.

I connected my laptop to the large television screen in my living room and tested the wireless remote multiple times.

I wanted the transition from dinner conversation to absolute destruction to be seamless.

I also ordered two small, discrete security cameras with audio recording capabilities.

I placed one on the bookshelf facing the dining table and another near the front door.

If they were secretly talking to real estate lawyers, I needed hard evidence of everything said in this room tonight.

Saturday evening arrived quickly, and my apartment smelled beautifully of slow-cooked pot roast and roasted vegetables.

At exactly six o'clock, the buzzer rang, and I let my family into the building.

My parents walked through the door first, both wearing overly friendly, victorious smiles.

My father was carrying the exact same heavy leather folder from the restaurant.

Claire walked in last, wearing loose, oversized gray sweatpants and a massive, faded sweater.

She moved agonizingly slowly through the living room, keeping one hand heavily resting against the wall for dramatic support.

She looked perfectly tired, pale, and incredibly fragile.

Anyone who didn't know the truth would have offered her a wheelchair immediately.

But I knew the absolute truth.

Just three days earlier, she had posted a smiling, sweaty photograph from a private Pilates studio across town.

I said absolutely nothing about her performance.

I warmly took their coats, poured hot coffee, and let everyone relax in the living room.

My mother constantly complimented the food, the smell of the apartment, and my supposed maturity.

My father asked me polite, hollow questions about my construction job, pretending to care about my career.

Claire barely touched her expensive dinner, pushing a single carrot around her plate with a weak, trembling fork.

She occasionally let out a soft, painful sigh just to remind everyone how bravely she was suffering.

After we finished dessert, the polite small talk abruptly died.

My father cleared his throat loudly, wiped his mouth, and pulled the leather folder onto the table.

He opened it dramatically and smoothed out a perfectly prepared property transfer document.

My home address had already been professionally typed in at the top of the legal page.

Claire’s full name appeared boldly on the line where the new legal owner’s name belonged.

The only thing missing on the entire document was my signature at the very bottom.

My father pulled an expensive gold pen from his shirt pocket and placed it directly on top of the paper.

He turned the document toward me and tapped the signature line twice.

Claire looked up at me with wide, tearful eyes and whispered that this would finally give her the peace she needed to heal.

I looked down at the blank signature line, feeling the weight of the moment heavy in the air.

I slowly reached my hand out across the table.

But I didn't pick up the gold pen.

I reached past the folder entirely and picked up the black television remote resting on the table.

I smiled at Claire and asked her a very simple question.

I asked her how the tequila tasted last Saturday night.
