Chapter 9 - The Confession

Vanessa smiled a wicked, triumphant smile as she pointed the heavy revolver at my forehead.

She looked entirely different from the arrogant executive who had slapped me at the family barbecue.

Her expensive clothes were torn, her hair was a mess, and her eyes burned with absolute, psychotic madness.

"You really thought you could destroy my perfect life and just walk away, Clara?" she sneered maliciously.

Detective Hayes slowly raised his hands, subtly trying to position his body between Vanessa and my nephew.

"The syndicate is going to kill you anyway, Vanessa, you are a massive liability to them," Hayes reasoned calmly.

Vanessa laughed a loud, hysterical laugh that echoed terribly through the empty train yard.

"I am not a liability, I am the new regional director of their entire financial operation," she bragged proudly.

She proudly confessed that she had orchestrated the entire hospital attack just to prove her loyalty to the cartel bosses.

"I poisoned Ryan because he was starting to ask too many questions about our offshore bank accounts," she admitted without remorse.

I secretly slipped my hand into my wet pocket and pressed the record button on my smartphone.

I needed her to confess to every single crime so the authorities would have undeniable, permanent proof.

"And what about the life insurance policy?" I asked, deliberately trying to keep her talking.

"That was just a highly lucrative bonus to fund my escape to a private island in the Caribbean," she answered gleefully.

She aimed the gun directly at Ryan, her finger hovering dangerously close to the heavy trigger.

"I am finally going to finish the job I started in the kitchen this morning," she declared with cold certainty.

Before she could pull the trigger, the deafening sound of a police helicopter filled the sky above the train yard.

A blinding white searchlight pierced through the roof of the boxcar, completely destroying Vanessa's visibility.

Detective Hayes lunged forward with explosive speed, tackling Vanessa violently to the wooden floor.

The revolver fired wildly into the ceiling as they wrestled desperately for control of the deadly weapon.

I grabbed a heavy, rusted iron spike from the corner of the boxcar and swung it with all my might.

The iron struck Vanessa directly in the shoulder, forcing her to drop the gun with a scream of pure agony.

Detective Hayes pinned her aggressively to the floor and secured her wrists with heavy zip ties.

The nightmare was finally, truly over, and we had survived the absolute worst night of our lives.

Suddenly, Detective Hayes stood up, picked up Vanessa's fallen revolver, and aimed it directly at my chest.
