Chapter 3 - The Hidden Millions

I showed the terrifying insurance document to my brother.
Ryan stared at the paper in absolute, paralyzed shock.
"She is planning to murder you for five million dollars," I whispered in horror.
Ryan shook his head wildly, refusing to believe his wife was capable of murder.
"This has to be some kind of sick, twisted misunderstanding," he argued desperately.
I grabbed his shoulders and forced him to look at the undeniable proof.
"She brought thugs to my house and told you that you were worth more dead than alive."
Ryan pulled out his cell phone and quickly dialed Vanessa's personal number.
She answered on the first ring with a smug, arrogant tone.
"Are you calling to beg for my forgiveness, Ryan?"
"I found the life insurance policy, Vanessa," he growled into the speaker.
The line went completely silent for a few terrifying seconds.
"You were not supposed to see that until it was time to collect," she finally replied.
"I am going straight to the police with this evidence," Ryan threatened.
Vanessa laughed a slow, wicked laugh that echoed through the phone speaker.
"You will never make it to the police station, my dear husband."
"What are you talking about?" Ryan demanded aggressively.
"Did you enjoy the special coffee I made for you this morning?" Vanessa asked sweetly.
Ryan dropped the cell phone onto the floor as a sudden, sharp gasp escaped his lips.
He clutched his chest tightly, his face turning a sickening shade of pale gray.
"Ryan, what is wrong?" I screamed, catching him as his knees buckled.
He collapsed onto the living room rug, his body convulsing violently in my arms.
Thick, white foam began to bubble rapidly from the corners of his mouth.
He stared up at me with terrified, helpless eyes as his breathing became incredibly shallow.
I grabbed my phone and dialed emergency services with frantically shaking fingers.
"Please hold on, Ryan, help is coming," I cried, pressing my hand against his slowing heart.
His eyes rolled back into his head as he completely lost consciousness.
Then, a loud pounding sound erupted against my front door.
I assumed it was the paramedics arriving in record time.
I threw the door open, but it was not the medical team standing on my porch.

It was two armed police officers holding a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.
"Clara, you are under arrest for the attempted murder of your brother," the taller officer announced.
