Chapter 2 - The Corporate Threat

Vanessa glared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred in her dark eyes.

She did not wait for an invitation before pushing her way into my small living room.

The two massive men followed her inside and immediately locked my front door.

"You are going to call Leo and force him to hand over that phone," Vanessa demanded.

I stood my ground and crossed my arms over my chest.

"I am not going to do any such thing, Vanessa."

She stepped so close to me that I could smell the expensive perfume radiating off her skin.

"My corporate lawyers are going to destroy your miserable little life if you do not comply."

I looked at the two men, realizing they were not lawyers at all.

They looked like heavily armed private security contractors hired to intimidate me.

"You cannot bully your way out of this situation," I warned her calmly.

One of the men stepped forward and placed his large hand forcefully on my shoulder.

"You should really listen to your sister-in-law, lady."

Before he could apply any more pressure, the sound of breaking glass shattered the tension.

Ryan climbed through my broken kitchen window holding a heavy aluminum baseball bat.

"Get your filthy hands off my sister right now!" Ryan roared.

The two men instantly backed away, surprised by the sudden, violent ambush.

Vanessa looked at her husband with an expression of pure disgust.

"You are actually defending this pathetic maid over your own wife?"

"You are a monster, Vanessa, and I am filing for divorce today," Ryan stated firmly.

Vanessa let out a cold, chilling laugh that made the hairs on my arms stand up.

"You cannot divorce me, Ryan, because you are worth far more to me dead than alive."

She signaled for her two goons to leave the house immediately.

As the men walked out the front door, one of them purposefully bumped into my coffee table.

A thick, manila folder slipped out of his jacket pocket and landed silently on the rug.

Vanessa stormed out of the house without noticing the dropped item.

I walked over and picked up the mysterious folder with trembling hands.

I opened the cover and felt my blood run completely cold.

It was a recently approved life insurance policy taken out on Ryan's life.

The sole beneficiary was Vanessa, and the payout was for exactly five million dollars.
