Chapter 5 - The Audit

The cursor blinked steadily on the bright screen of my laptop.
I had spent my entire life playing by the rules, keeping my head down, and fixing the endless messes my family created.
But they had crossed a line that could never be uncrossed.
They had threatened my daughter, risked my parents' home, and tried to weaponize the legal system against me.
I opened a blank email draft and addressed it to Sarah, my former roommate who was now a senior forensic auditor for the Internal Revenue Service.
I didn't ask her for a favor, and I didn't ask for advice.
I simply attached three years' worth of highly detailed financial spreadsheets I had meticulously kept regarding Trisha's income.
Trisha had always claimed she was a struggling artist, but she ran a very lucrative, under-the-table cash business selling custom digital artwork online.
She bragged constantly about making six figures, but she had never declared a single dime of it on her taxes because she officially claimed zero income to qualify for state benefits.
I attached the screenshots of her bragging on social media, the Venmo transaction logs she had carelessly sent me, and the exact IP addresses of her digital storefronts.
I wrote a single sentence in the body of the email.
"Please review the attached documents regarding severe, ongoing tax evasion and state welfare fraud."
I hit send and immediately closed the laptop.
If Trisha wanted a legal war, I was going to give her a federal investigation that no expensive lawyer could ever make disappear.
The next morning, at exactly 11:45 a.m., Neil and I sat in the polished conference room of Mr. Vance’s downtown law firm.
Trisha sat across the massive glass table, wearing an expensive designer suit and smirking like she had already won the lottery.
My parents sat right beside her, holding her hands and glaring at me with absolute, undisguised contempt.
"Well, Andrea," Mr. Vance said smoothly, checking his expensive gold watch.
"You have fifteen minutes left to authorize the transfer, or I will file the injunction and freeze your accounts."
Trisha leaned forward, resting her elbows confidently on the glass table.
"You really should have just given me the money, Andrea," Trisha sneered.
"Now Mom and Dad are in massive debt because you couldn't stand to see me succeed."
I didn't look at her, and I didn't reach for the transfer paperwork sitting in front of me.
"I brought something else for you to sign, Trisha," I said calmly, pulling a single sheet of paper from my purse.
I slid it across the glass table toward Mr. Vance.
The lawyer picked it up, expecting a settlement counter-offer.
Instead, he read the bold print, and the color completely drained from his arrogant face.
"What is this?" Trisha demanded, trying to snatch the paper from him.
"That is a formal notification from the IRS," I explained, keeping my voice perfectly level.
"They have officially opened a forensic audit into your unreported digital art income over the last three years."
Trisha froze, her smug smile completely vanishing in a fraction of a second.
"What did you do?" my father yelled, slamming his hand down on the table.
"I simply provided the federal government with the truth," I replied.
Mr. Vance cleared his throat nervously, adjusting his collar as he realized the massive scope of the problem.
"Ms. Miller, if you are being audited for tax fraud, my firm cannot legally accept any funds from you that may be tied to criminal activity," the lawyer stated carefully.
"What?" Trisha shrieked, looking at him in absolute panic.
"You work for me! Mom and Dad paid your retainer!"
"They paid the retainer, but the funds they used were secured by a fraudulent loan," I added quietly.
My mother gasped, clutching her pearls in genuine terror.
"What are you talking about, Andrea?" she cried.
I looked directly into my mother's terrified eyes.
"Dad couldn't qualify for a second mortgage on his pension alone."
"So he forged my signature as a co-signer on the loan documents yesterday morning."
I pulled out a copy of the mortgage application I had pulled from my credit monitoring service.
"If you file that lawsuit, Mr. Vance, my very first move in discovery will be handing this forged document over to the police."
"My father will go to federal prison for wire fraud, and my sister will go to prison for tax evasion."
The entire conference room plunged into a suffocating, terrifying silence.
They had thought they were cornering a scared, compliant victim.
They hadn't realized they had just backed a fiercely protective mother into a corner holding a loaded gun.
"Drop the lawsuit, return the retainer to my parents, and never contact me again," I demanded.
Before anyone could say a word, the heavy glass door of the conference room violently burst open.
A man in a sharp gray suit stepped into the room, holding a shiny gold badge.
"Trisha Miller?" the man asked loudly.
May you like
"Yes?" Trisha whispered, trembling uncontrollably.
"I am Special Agent Harris with the FBI, and you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit grand larceny."
