Chapter 10 - The False Victory

I settled into the back of the armored FBI SUV, finally allowing the tension to slowly drain from my exhausted muscles.

Hannah was safely buckled in beside me, happily drinking a juice box completely oblivious to the massive criminal operation that had just been dismantled.

Trisha was sitting in a federal holding cell facing twenty years.

Neil was arrested for conspiracy, wire fraud, and attempted kidnapping.

My father was in custody for attempted murder, and my mother was currently dealing with the foreclosure of their heavily mortgaged house.

I had successfully severed the toxic roots of my family tree, and I had protected my daughter's future.

It was a complete, flawless victory.

The FBI agent driving the SUV looked at me in the rearview mirror and offered a small, reassuring smile.

"You did incredibly well today, Mrs. Miller," the agent said kindly.

"Your husband and your sister won't be able to hurt you or your daughter ever again."

"Thank you," I replied, leaning my head against the cool glass window, ready to finally sleep.

My cell phone vibrated violently in my pocket, shattering the peaceful silence of the vehicle.

I pulled it out, expecting a follow-up call from Agent Harris regarding the court dates.

Instead, the caller ID displayed a completely unknown, blocked international number.

I hesitated for a fraction of a second before answering the call, pressing the phone firmly against my ear.

"Hello?" I said cautiously.

"Andrea Miller," a smooth, heavily accented voice said on the other end of the line.

"I am calling to personally thank you for your incredible assistance today."

My blood completely froze in my veins, and I gripped the phone so tightly my knuckles turned white.

"Who is this?" I demanded, my voice dropping to a terrified whisper so Hannah wouldn't hear.

"I am the man your husband owed forty thousand dollars to," the voice replied calmly.

"I was watching the playground earlier when you so bravely tackled my incredibly stupid enforcers."

"They were supposed to quietly collect the child, not cause a massive federal incident."

I stared blindly at the back of the driver's seat, completely unable to process the terrifying reality of the conversation.

The cartel boss wasn't angry that I had gotten his men arrested.

He sounded completely, utterly amused.

"Your husband is a coward, and he will undoubtedly sing like a bird to the FBI to reduce his prison sentence," the man continued smoothly.

"He will give them all of my operational routing numbers, my safe house locations, and my domestic contacts."

"I know he will do this, because he is weak."

"So why are you calling me?" I choked out, absolute terror gripping my heart.

"Because while you were busy playing the hero at the school, and the FBI was busy arresting your pathetic husband, I was busy securing the digital leverage he left behind."

"You see, Andrea, your husband didn't just owe me forty thousand dollars."

"He owed me two million dollars, and he used your high-yield trust account as the primary collateral for the loan."

The air completely vanished from my lungs.

"When you so cleverly moved the funds to secure your daughter's future, you officially activated the collateral clause in his contract."

"And since you are legally his wife, the debt is now entirely yours."

I looked down at Hannah, who was smiling and swinging her little legs in the car seat.

I had destroyed my entire family to save her, only to realize I had simply traded one set of monsters for another.

"I am not paying you a single dime," I whispered fiercely, trying to summon the courage I had used earlier.

"The FBI has my family, and they will protect me."

The man on the phone let out a cold, chilling laugh that echoed in my ear like a death sentence.

"The FBI cannot protect you from a digital contract, Andrea."

"I just transferred the deed to your house, the titles to your cars, and the entire balance of your daughter's trust into my offshore holding company."

"You are officially bankrupt, homeless, and in my debt."

"But don't worry, I always have highly lucrative jobs available for women who know how to solve messy problems."

The call disconnected with a sharp click, leaving me listening to the dead dial tone in absolute, horrifying silence.

I sat in the back of the federal vehicle, surrounded by armed agents who thought I was completely safe.

I had won the battle against my sister and my husband.
