Chapter 9 - The Ultimate Betrayal

I held Emma tightly against my chest and pointed my trembling gun directly at Carter's heart. I told him I would gladly kill him if he took one more step toward my child. Carter simply laughed, entirely unfazed by the weapon shaking in my hands. He explained that the gun I took from Rachel was completely unloaded. My sister had given me an empty weapon because she was secretly working for Carter the entire time. The betrayal hit me like a physical blow, leaving me entirely breathless and devastated. Rachel had faked her tears, her remorse, and even allowed herself to be shot in a non-lethal spot. It was all a meticulously planned theatrical performance to lead me directly into Carter's trap. The heavy metal door clicked open, and Mark walked into the room holding a thick briefcase. He handed the briefcase to Carter, confirming that the life insurance payout had just successfully cleared. Mark looked at me with cold, dead eyes and said he was finally completely free of me. He told Carter to dispose of us both in the incinerator located in the clinic's basement. Carter smiled and reached for Emma, eager to finish his gruesome task. But before Carter could lay a finger on my daughter, the deafening sound of police sirens filled the air. Red and blue lights flashed brilliantly through the frosted glass windows of the clinic. Mark panicked, screaming at Carter that they had been entirely set up. Carter drew a real weapon from his suit jacket and immediately pointed it at Mark's head. A violent struggle ensued between the two men as they fought desperately over the loaded gun. I did not wait to see who would win the deadly fight. I kicked a heavy metal surgical tray into Carter's legs, causing him to stumble backward. I grabbed Emma and sprinted wildly out of the room, running blindly down the dark corridor. Mark managed to rip the gun from Carter's hands and chased angrily after me. He cornered me at the end of the hallway, raising the weapon and aiming it directly at my face. He sneered and told me I was always a stubborn, annoying thorn in his side. Suddenly, a massive gunshot echoed through the narrow hallway, completely deafening me. Mark dropped his weapon and fell forward, a dark red bloodstain rapidly spreading across his back.
