Chapter 2 - The Nine Million Dollar Question

The flight to New York was a blur of anxiety and adrenaline.

I could not stop thinking about the anonymous text message I had received outside the auditorium.

What graduation money were they talking about?

I pushed the thought away as the black town car pulled up to the towering glass skyscraper on Park Avenue.

Ingrid Søberg was waiting for me in a corner office with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park.

She did not treat me like a disappointment or a foolish child.

She treated me like an equal.

"We have read every single paper you have published over the last three years," Ingrid said warmly.

She slid a thick, leather-bound folder across the polished mahogany desk.

"Halden Vale wants you to be our new Director of Emerging Market Strategic Analysis."

I opened the folder and scanned the compensation breakdown.

Base salary, signing bonuses, and deferred equity added up to nine million dollars over three years.

My breath caught in my throat as I stared at the impossible numbers.

"Nine million dollars?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

"Your predictive models on infrastructure collapse are revolutionary, Marlo," Ingrid explained.

"We believe you will save our firm ten times that amount in the next fiscal year."

I picked up the heavy gold pen resting on the desk and signed my name on the dotted line.

I had never felt so validated in my entire twenty-nine years of existence.

Ingrid smiled and shook my hand firmly.

"Welcome to the firm, Marlo," she said.

"Thank you, I am ready to start immediately," I replied.

"That is wonderful to hear, because your first assignment begins tomorrow," Ingrid noted, pulling out a secondary file.

"Where am I going?" I asked.

"We recently acquired a failing manufacturing logistics company on the West Coast," she explained.

"We need you to fly to Sacramento and audit their executive team before we terminate them."

My heart stopped beating for a fraction of a second.

"Sacramento?" I echoed.

May you like

Ingrid nodded and turned the file around so I could see the corporate logo.

It was the exact same company where my father had worked as the Chief Financial Officer for twenty years.
