Chapter 4 - The Unwelcome Guest

The heavy footsteps drew closer to the master bedroom door, each thud sounding like a hammer blow against my chest.
Ian motioned wildly for us to duck behind the heavy velvet curtains draped over the window.
Adam pulled me back just as the bedroom door swung open with a slow, agonizing creak.
I held my breath, pressing my face against the dusty fabric of the curtain while peering through a tiny gap.
A man in a sharp, unmarked dark suit stepped into the room.
He did not look like a police officer or a federal investigator.
He moved with the practiced, silent precision of a professional operative.
The man walked straight to the wooden armoire, bypassing everything else in the room.
He reached for the hidden panel behind the bottom shelf, pressing his thumb firmly against the wood.
The secret compartment popped open, but his hand came away completely empty.
The heavy steel lockbox was sitting right on the bed in plain sight.
The stranger froze instantly, his head snapping around to scan the dark, quiet bedroom.
He pulled a sleek, black firearm from his shoulder holster, checking the chamber with a quiet metallic click.
"I know someone is in here," the man called out, his voice entirely devoid of emotion.
"You can come out now, or I will start shooting through the curtains."
Adam stepped out from behind the curtain before I could grab his arm, placing himself protectively in front of me.
"Put the gun down," Adam ordered, keeping his voice steady despite the obvious danger.
The man kept his weapon aimed squarely at Adam’s chest, narrowing his eyes suspiciously.
"Who are you, and what did you take out of that box?" the man demanded.
"This is our family home, and you are trespassing," I said, stepping out from the shadows.
"We took what belongs to us."
The man smiled coldly, a cruel expression that sent a chill straight down my spine.
"Your parents didn't own this house, and they certainly didn't own the operation running underneath it," the stranger replied.
"Hand over the lockbox, and maybe I let you walk out of here alive."
Ian suddenly stepped out holding the steel box, his hands shaking slightly but his jaw set in pure defiance.
"You're one of the men Dad was laundering money for," Ian realized, his eyes widening in horror.
"The syndicate."
The man raised his gun higher, preparing to pull the trigger to eliminate all three of us.
Before he could fire, the front windows downstairs shattered in a deafening explosion of breaking glass.
Heavy tactical boots pounded up the stairs, and flashing red and blue lights illuminated the bedroom walls.
"FBI! Drop your weapon!" a chorus of deep voices roared from the hallway.
The syndicate operative cursed loudly, dropped his gun onto the carpet, and threw his hands behind his head.
Federal agents swarmed the bedroom in seconds, tackling the intruder to the floor and slapping heavy cuffs on him.
An older, silver-haired agent stepped forward, flashing a badge directly at us.

"Agent Miller," he introduced himself, looking at Ian and me with intense curiosity.
"We've been tracking this criminal enterprise for five years, but we never expected to find the missing ledger hidden inside a family home."
