Chapter 2 - The Felony Warrant

The hospital hallway fell into a stunned, absolute silence.

Gloria stopped struggling against the security guards, her mouth hanging open in complete shock.

Walt’s face turned the color of ash, and he broke out into a sudden, cold sweat.

"What are you talking about?" Walt stammered, his voice cracking with panic.

"We are respected members of this community, you have no right to accuse us of anything."

Brenda did not blink or flinch; she simply tapped a button on her computer screen.

"When I scanned the emergency intake bracelet, our system cross-referenced your state ID numbers with our database," Brenda explained.

"An alert popped up for an active bench warrant out of Ohio and Pennsylvania for grand larceny and elder financial exploitation."

I stared at my parents, realizing that their clean clothes, neat forms, and church smiles had always been nothing more than a disguise.

They hadn't just been hoarding control over their grandchildren; they had spent a lifetime running from their past crimes.

Adam squeezed my shoulder gently, while Lizzy buried her face deeper against my jacket.

"Is that why you isolated Ian?" I asked, my voice trembling with disgust.

"Is that why you forced him into silence so he couldn't look into your finances?"

Gloria let out a harsh, hysterical laugh, tossing her head back defiantly.

"We raised you, and this is how you repay us?" she shrieked at me.

"You ungrateful little brat, we took care of that useless brother of yours and we protected this family!"

Two police officers arrived seconds later, pushing through the automatic sliding doors of the ER.

Brenda pointed directly at my parents, officially handing over the custody of the warrant information.

The officers bypassed us completely and walked straight up to Gloria and Walt.

They pulled out heavy steel handcuffs and snapped them securely around my mother's wrists first.

"Gloria and Walt Miller, you are under arrest," the lead officer stated firmly.

As they were dragged toward the exit, Gloria twisted her head around, fixing me with a look of pure, venomous hatred.

"You think you've won, Natalie?" she screamed over the wail of the hospital intercom.

"Wait until Ian wakes up and finds out you destroyed what's left of this family!"

The heavy glass doors slid shut behind them, cutting off her furious tirade.

The emergency room finally returned to a quiet, steady hum of medical activity.

Brenda offered me a sympathetic smile and handed me an intake clipboard for Lizzy's full medical evaluation.

I signed my name at the bottom, feeling a massive weight slowly lift from my chest.

We stayed at the hospital until sunrise, letting the doctors run every necessary test to ensure Lizzy was physically recovering.

By dawn, Ian’s addiction counselor called us with an urgent update from the recovery facility.

Ian had finally finished his supervised detox program, and he was demanding to know where his daughter was.

Adam drove us straight to the treatment center, holding my hand tightly the entire way.

When we walked into the private meeting room, Ian was sitting at a metal table, looking thinner than he had in years.

He looked up, saw Lizzy hiding behind my legs, and immediately burst into tears.

"I'm so sorry," Ian sobbed, pulling his daughter into a desperate hug.

"I trusted them, Nata... I didn't know."

I knelt beside them, telling him he was finally safe to start over.

Then Ian pulled a small, worn leather journal from his hoodie pocket and handed it to me.

He whispered that our parents hadn't just been running from financial fraud.

He opened the journal to a hidden page, and the words written inside revealed a secret so dark it threatened to destroy everything we thought we knew.
