Chapter 9 - The Devil's Deal

Brooke smiled sweetly, the shotgun resting casually on the window frame.

She told me to drop my pistol and put my hands where she could see them.

I dropped the weapon into the mud, knowing I had no other choice.

She ordered us to get into the back of the van.

I helped my mother climb inside, then hoisted Arthur in beside her.

Brooke locked the heavy metal doors from the front console.

She threw the van into gear and drove us away from the woods.

I asked her what she had done to Agent Miller.

She laughed and said Miller had been working for her side since the beginning.

He was the one who tipped Brooke off about my secret audit of Westbridge.

I felt a cold surge of absolute betrayal wash over me.

I was surrounded by enemies in every direction.

Brooke explained that Vance and Landry were too busy fighting each other to notice her moves.

She had hacked the cartel's communication network using the fake drive.

She didn't need the decryption key anymore because she had hijacked the entire money supply.

She was driving us to a private airfield where a jet was waiting for her.

She was taking the money, leaving the country, and abandoning Arthur forever.

I asked her why she was bringing us along if she had already won.

She looked at me through the metal grating separating the front and back seats.

She said my father wanted to see his family one last time before he executed us.

My blood ran ice cold as the reality of her words settled in.

My father was waiting at the airfield.

I looked around the dark, cramped cargo area of the van for any kind of weapon.

There was a heavy steel tire iron strapped to the side wall.

I waited until Brooke took a sharp turn on the winding mountain road.

I grabbed the tire iron and smashed it into the reinforced glass behind her head.

The glass spider-webbed but did not break completely.

May you like

Brooke cursed and swerved, reaching for her shotgun with one hand.

I struck the glass again with every ounce of strength I had left.
