Chapter 5 - The Inside Man

I watched my mentor hand over my life to a corrupt local cop.

Director Vance didn't even flinch as he walked out of the holding block.

He was on my father’s payroll all along.

Landry unlocked the cell door and stepped inside with a baton in his hand.

He told me it was a shame I had to die in a jailhouse brawl.

He swung the baton at my head with lethal force.

I dodged the strike, the heavy wood smashing into the concrete wall.

I used the momentum to drive my knee into his stomach.

Landry gasped for air, dropping the baton to the floor.

I wrapped my handcuffed arms around his neck and choked him until he passed out.

I quickly searched his pockets and found the keys to my cuffs.

I freed my hands and took his radio and service weapon.

I locked the unconscious captain inside the cell and slipped out the back exit.

The rain was still pouring down, washing away my footprints in the mud.

I sneaked around to the front of the station to find my mother.

She was sitting in the back of Arthur’s car, looking terrified.

Arthur was standing outside the car, smoking a cigarette and nervously checking his watch.

I crept up behind him and pressed the barrel of Landry's gun against his spine.

I ordered him to get into the driver's seat and start the engine.

He complied immediately, his hands shaking violently on the steering wheel.

I climbed into the back seat next to my mother and hugged her tightly.

I told Arthur to drive to our childhood home right now.

We had to beat Brooke to the buried decryption key.

Arthur looked at me through the rearview mirror with a tragic expression.

He put the car in gear and started driving down the dark, slick road.

May you like

He whispered that we were already too late.

He had given the decryption key to Vance a week ago.
