Chapter 5 - The Secretary's Secret

Sarah rushed into her small kitchen and returned with a damp towel and a glass of cold water.

I greedily drank the water while she gently wiped the dried blood from my scraped forehead.

I asked her why Tom would ever send someone to hurt her.

Sarah walked over to her dining table, which was completely covered in printed bank statements and corporate legal documents.

She explained that she had never stolen a single penny from the architecture firm.

She had actually discovered a massive offshore financial account hidden entirely under my mother's maiden name.

Tom had been slowly draining the firm's central accounts and laundering the stolen money through my mother's ancient trust fund.

I shook my head in confusion, stating that my mother did not even remember her own address most days.

Sarah looked at me with a profound sadness in her tired eyes.

She told me that my mother did not have natural dementia or Alzheimer's disease at all.

Sarah handed me a toxicological report that she had illegally obtained from a private laboratory.

The report showed that someone had been slowly poisoning my mother with a heavy metal compound that perfectly mimics severe cognitive decline.

The realization hit me with the force of a speeding freight train.

Tom had volunteered to make my mother's special herbal tea every single morning before he left for work.

He had intentionally destroyed her mind so he could use her identity to hide millions of dollars in stolen corporate funds.

He needed me committed to a psychiatric facility so I could never legally challenge his custody of the children or investigate the finances.

I asked Sarah why he was taking my mother and my babies to Switzerland tonight.

Sarah explained that the offshore bank required an in-person biological verification from the account holder to withdraw the final massive sum.

He was taking my mother to sign the papers, and he was taking my children as ultimate leverage to ensure I remained silent.

I stood up from the chair, a blinding rage completely replacing my previous exhaustion and fear.

I told Sarah that we needed to drive to the private airfield immediately before their jet could take off.

Sarah grabbed her car keys from the counter and nodded in fierce agreement.

Before we could take a single step toward the front door, the heavy wood suddenly splintered inward with a deafening crash.

The door flew off its hinges and slammed violently onto the living room floor.

Standing in the hallway was the same massive security guard who had thrown me into the van earlier.

He pulled a dark metal handgun from his shoulder holster and pointed it directly at my chest.

He smiled cruelly and told us that our little investigation was officially over.
