Chapter 2 - The Silent House

I stared at Tom's name on the airline ticket while my brain desperately tried to process the impossible information.

There was absolutely no logical reason for my husband to be flying to Switzerland with my mother tonight.

I looked up from the paper and watched my mother gently rocking Lily in the corner of the hallway.

She was softly singing a lullaby that I had never heard before in my entire life.

I unlocked my phone screen and rapidly dialed Tom's private office number.

The call instantly failed and a strange error message appeared across my digital screen.

I looked at the signal indicator in the top corner of my phone and saw that I had absolutely zero service.

This was entirely impossible because my childhood home sat right in the middle of a major suburban cell grid.

I walked toward the living room window to see if I could catch a signal near the glass.

As I passed the television stand, I noticed a strange black device plugged directly into the wall outlet.

It had a small blinking green light and three short antennas pointing toward the ceiling.

I recognized the device immediately because Tom's architecture firm used them to block signals during confidential corporate meetings.

Someone had intentionally installed a military-grade cellular jammer inside my mother's house.

I reached down and yanked the device out of the wall with shaking hands.

My phone immediately buzzed with a flood of missed call notifications and unread text messages.

Emma began to cry softly, asking me why Daddy wanted to take Grandma and Lily away.

I knelt down and promised my brave six-year-old that nobody was taking our family anywhere.

I told Emma to go to the kitchen and find the spare house key hidden in the coffee tin.

While she ran down the hall, I dialed emergency services to report a medical crisis.

Before the dispatcher could even answer the ringing line, a heavy knock echoed against the front door.

I peered through the peephole and felt a massive wave of relief wash over my entire body.

Tom was standing on the front porch wearing his expensive gray business suit.

I shouted his name and frantically told him that my mother was having a severe psychological breakdown.

I begged him to break the glass on the front door so he could get inside and help me save Lily.

Tom did not move to break the glass or offer me any words of comfort.

He simply stared directly into the peephole with a completely blank expression on his face.

He slowly raised a large white envelope and pressed it flat against the glass of the door.

Written across the front of the envelope in thick black marker were the words "Psychiatric Hold Order For Rachel."

Two massive men wearing private security uniforms stepped onto the porch directly behind my husband.

Tom smiled a terrifyingly cold smile and inserted his own key into the front door lock.
