Chapter 6 - The Sister's Confession

The terrace fell into a dead, horrifying silence as the MPs dragged Alan away.
My mother stood frozen, her chest heaving as she tried to process what the sergeant had just said.
“An anonymous tip?” she whispered, her eyes darting around the empty patio.
From the dark corner of the garden, a small, trembling voice broke the silence.
“It wasn't anonymous,” Lily said as she stepped into the light.
She was holding her cell phone, the screen still glowing with an active recording app.
“I recorded him threatening Ryan, and I sent it to the base security office,” Lily confessed.
My mother looked at her youngest, favorite daughter as if she had just sprouted horns.
“You turned in your own stepfather?” my mother shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria.
“He is a criminal, Mom, and I am not letting him use my fiancé as a pawn for his dirty money,” Lily fired back, finally showing some steel.
My mother raised her hand and slapped Lily across the face with a sickening crack.
Before she could pull her hand back, I crossed the distance between us and grabbed her wrist.
I twisted it just enough to make her gasp in pain, my eyes locked onto hers with lethal warning.
“If you ever touch her again, you will leave this venue in handcuffs too,” I promised in a low, dangerous whisper.
I shoved her arm away, stepping protectively in front of Lily.
My mother backed away, her eyes wide with fear and realization that she had lost control of both her daughters.
“You are both dead to me,” she spat out bitterly before turning and running out of the restaurant.
Lily buried her face in my shoulder, sobbing as the adrenaline finally crashed.
Ryan rushed over, wrapping his arms around both of us in a fierce, protective embrace.
For a moment, it felt like the worst of the storm had passed.
Then, Ryan’s secure military pager began to beep frantically on his belt.

He pulled it off, his face turning an ashen, sickly white as he read the encrypted text.
“My security clearance has just been suspended pending a full federal investigation,” he whispered.
